As we all know, the MA&PA stretched 77 miles between York, PA, and Baltimore, MD, even though the towns were only 53 miles apart by highway.

It was a narrow twisty right of way filled with sharp curves, rock cuts, steep grades, wooden trestles and some steel bridges.

The Ma&Pa Historical Society gets together once a year and hikes the old railroad grade.

This year, we hiked from Fenmore to Laurel, PA.

This part of the line included a grade relocation project that was completed in 1913. It eliminated "The Devil's Backbone."

Sharp curves and one wooden trestle was replaced with a straighter railroad line with deep rock cuts and 3 new steel bridges.

Operations south of York ended in 1983, abandoned in 1986 and torn up in 1987.

An area doctor owned the land for years after 1987 and would not allow any visitors. When the doctor died, the land was sold to a conservation club who are much friendlier and are slowly improving and upgrading the property.

The line as it curves by the former station area. The station is a nearby home. They invited us in to look in the basement where the station was.

On the other side of the creek. The original line had a sharp S curve after the wooden trestle which slowed down trains
