Here's a few pics that XPLORER and I took on Sunday. The weather was AWFUL,so we didn't really get to do much,so we used the day to scout out where we thought the ROW was.We had a very sucessful day,and pretty much found out that all the old timers I talked to pretty much had NO idea where it ran!!LOL!!! I also made a few eye opening discoveries on my computer. Most of us think of the WB&E as being a long lost, long gone railroad.WELL...It may be lost, but it's certainly far from GONE...Using the Microsoft "Virtual Earth" Terraserver,I was able to follow the ALMOST COMPLETELY INTACT mainline from Suscon to just east of RT33 in Stroudsburg. It appears that, except for a few minor areas that have been destroyed by quarries and highway construction, the entire ROW,and apparently, almost all of the track,is still there. The main thing is,it's located 100 yards beyond NOWHERE.I spent quit a bit of time chasing the ROW on the computer so far,now that I know where it runs,I'm going to see if there are any roads near it,so we can get some pics of it in the spring. Most of the track has at least 2 or more miles between it and any kind of access,it's really remote.WE were sucessful in mapping out exactly where the line runs here in the valley, with the exception of a small section right at the very beginning in Plains. Here's a pic of the ROW heading toward William st. in Plains. .

Here's a pic of a branchline just to the right of the abutment pic Bill Branches posted. This was the connection with the D&H,and was also a mine connection. There was also a small yard behind the abutment.

Here's a pic looking north from the former site of the Suscon overpass. This track runs several miles down to an area near Walmart in Pittston. There was,,[IS??] a long "S" curve in the track halfway down the mountain[this pic is several hundred feet above the last] that ran along the edge of the now abandoned Independent Explosives company.

Hi, Lou:
If you happen to drive on Rte 940 near Pocono Lake or Pocono Pines, the ROW of the WB&E is clear as day.  A bridge is missing in Pocono Lake, so it is not continuous.  The Power company uses it for a pole line road.  Also, if you are looking carefully, the ROW comes right up along I-380 south, shortly before it ends at I-80.  This can be seen most of the year, but in the winter, you can find where it goes through the trees in the median.  Good luck exploring.

565fan,I know about the bridge at Pocono lake, thanks!! I've actually been able to follow the entire route from Suscon to just short of RT33.It's really surprising how intact the whole thing is,it's just terribly inacsesable.

Lou Waus up man!!!
Im not sold on that I found another picture that kind of shows all of kingston in the flat still. The WBC is intact but I could see a dark line Starting at the Gauntlet bridge. running up to Market St. about the area of present day Third Ave. In an old old book I have, I found that the Bridge was originally steel but they built the aquaduct out of wood. After a flood the wood section was not safe so the just cut the line back to Plains and errected the Plains Station and abandon Kingston. Well I will be in Kingston crawling through peoples yards this week. You have a scanner incase I need bail?LOL

Does anyone know where in Plains the WB&E station was.  I grew up in Plains and the only station I recall is the Laurel Line.

I think the WB&E tracks crossed Williams Street and ran up through Hudson in back of the Cotton Avenue School.  There was a ballfield up in the woods and the tracks were alongside.  In the mid sixties the rails were still in place.  They were taken out in the late sixties or early seventies.  They went up into Yatesville and Laflin.   We used to walk them to Laflin and Yatesville.  There was also the remains of a mine or shaft near the ballfield.  We used to climb on the steel work.  Does anyone know if it had a name?
