Hello everyone
I am tapping into the board expertise looking for help to solve a puzzle or at least point me in a direction for further research.

I have a wood ammo crate with the following stenciled on it.

POLICE STATION
CITY IO603

This was shipped in 1935.  It is not clear if the US Post Office handled it or possibly it went by rail.  I lean it is likely it went by rail, that is just an opinion but it is the reason I am here, where I hope maybe someone recognizes the code type, not necessarily the exact code.  Where an understanding of the code type may help to decipher it.

I attempted some Google searches to determine what city IO603 might be, not much luck.

Clearly it is not a zip code, this item was shipped in 1935 and zip codes did not exist until the 1960's.

I wonder if "IO" may refer to Iowa.

Can anyone tell me what city it was shipped to or suggest further research to uncover that?

thanks in advance for any input

It is an instance of, whatever was in the box?

So that: Code IO 603 could have been an internal route code for one of the active railroads. It could as well be a code for the old RAILWAY EXPRESS.

There were entire classes of shipments which could not - and would not - move in Railroad 'LCL' service. Much of the excluded moves could move on
REX. (The latter carried live animals, currency, money, and various Classes A & B Explosives, as well as myriad other shipments.)

Wooden Ammo Crate, so presumably small arms ammunition.ORM-D these days i think, no idea of the material code applicable in 1935.

Great to see you on board. You present a good point. This 'WIKI' item is helpful...

Your writer favors the marks may have been an REX point  code?

I agree it does seem to be a REX point code.  Further unsubstantiated history of this item, apparently attributes it's origin to someone in Oklahoma.

Anyone know where I might be able to dig into and find the REX codes??

Now you are raising the bar! Who ever knows where such documents remain? May show up in a community Yard Sale somewhere?
Estate effects in some Attic, home of late 'Uncle Fred"? <G>
