Re:  WV Stations and Depots - By DannyR on 12/14/04 at 17:54:25 - 'Ann_Street_Station-1918_mod.jpg' 106 KB
Another one that I have found most interesting was the Ann St. station in Parkersburg. This building was demolished before my time but from photos and first hand accounts from my parents, the fact that it existed has piqued my curiosity.

Ann St. was one of two stations in Parkersburg. It serviced the "low line" (B&O Ohio River line) whereas the the B&O mainline station was a seperate facility. This view looks from the track (west) side of the building as it appeared in 1918.

This north view identifies one of the fascinating features of the Ann St. station---the elevated track. Also visible are bridges across the Ohio River, among them the B&O mainline bridge as they appeared in 1923.

Princeton has a station to be proud of. It appeared only some final touches were still in progress when I took this photo.

Beautiful structure.

For any unfamiliar with the Point Pleasant area, here are two photos of the aforementioned railroad bridges located there. Unfortunately, I did not have time to wait to capture a train on either of them.

CSX bridge across the Kanawha River just upstream from its mouth. This structure was built in 1947 by the B&O as a replacement that enabled the road to use heavier locomotives on the Ohio River Sub.

Re: A few pictures from Point Pleasant WV - By DannyR on 07/19/04 at 12:16:11 - 'NYC_Bridge_Pt._Pleasant.jpg' 82 KB
The Ohio River bridge now utilized by NS. Predecessor heritages include NYC, PC, and CR. If the Silver Bridge were still intact, it would dominate the foreground of this photo.

Amtrak "Cardinal" at Deepwater - By Andrew Cummings on 03/24/03 at 22:14:00 - '20030321_AMTK_61_Deepwater_sm.jpg' 85 KB
Here's the same train, on a different day and 33 miles further to the east.  Not one of my better pictures....  Sorry about weeds, but I was in the wrong spot (and waiting for a westbound train instead).

Location is Deepwater, just west of the Virginian Bridge, March 21, 2003, at around 5 PM.

Amtrak "Cardinal" in Charleston - By DannyR on 03/23/03 at 22:55:30 - 'Eastbound_Cardinal_Approach_Charleston.jpg' 39 KB

Re: Amtrak "Cardinal" in Charleston - By DannyR on 03/23/03 at 22:56:58 - 'Amtrak_P40_834.jpg' 45 KB
Power on the point this day is P40 #834.

[26]

Re: Amtrak "Cardinal" in Charleston - By DannyR on 03/23/03 at 22:59:21 - 'Eastbound_Cardinal_Departing.jpg' 51 KB
Now departing the station on its eastbound run. The passengers will soon be treated to the scenic vista of the New River gorge. Note the signals on the classic C&O cantilever---the Cardinal will be crossing over to the opposite main.

Re: Amtrak "Cardinal" in Charleston - By DannyR on 04/22/03 at 12:44:14 - 'Eastbound_Cardinal_Ax_River.jpg' 42 KB
From a vantage point across the Kanawha River in the East End, the eastbound Cardinal has just departed the station.

B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 01/08/03 at 00:04:35 - 'BO_at_Millwood_1.jpg' 57 KB
A series of trackside photos of the B&O Ohio River line taken during the Chessie era at Millwood in 1981:

A northbound view in Millwood. Simply a whistle stop, it nonetheless was the junction(Ripley Landing) for the branchline that ran approximately fifteen miles to Ripley. The connection was just beyond the range of this shot.

A pulpwood operation existed here for many years; am not sure of status today.

[35]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 01/08/03 at 00:10:27 - 'BO_at_Millwood_2.jpg' 65 KB
Another northbound view this time just a little south of the Millwood hamlet.

The rails are shiny from the locals that served the industries in the valley between Parkersburg and Huntington. Wheeling was still a player when these photos were taken as trains from Pittsburgh to Huntington (and vice versa) still traveled the line.

No Q316 or 317 in these days, either, as the Parkersburg Branch and St. Louis mainline were still active.

[36]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 01/08/03 at 00:13:08 - 'BO_at_Millwood_3.jpg' 72 KB
This view across the line at Millwood looks at Mill Creek. The land across the creek is actually a peninsula for Mill Creek parallels the Ohio River for a considerable distance before emptying into it.

Somewhat of a surprise that old passing siding was still in place

[37]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 01/08/03 at 00:18:59 - 'BO_at_Millwood_4.jpg' 60 KB
This northbound shot is approximately two miles south of Millwood. The Ohio River is clearly visible in this view.

Years ago while walking this stretch of track with my dad on one occasion, the black snakes were out in force. No doubt they found that hot ballast to their liking!

[38]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 01/08/03 at 00:22:42 - 'BO_at_Millwood_5.jpg' 52 KB
The last shot in this sequence is from the same vantage point of the previous photo except that this view is to the south. The Racine Lock and Dam looms around the river bend.

[39]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 12:54:35 - 'CSX_at_Millwood_north.jpg' 144 KB
Move the hands of time ahead 22 years and this is Millwood on CSX. This view looks north towards Ravenswood and Parkersburg.

In B&O annals, this location was technically Ripley Landing. The gravel road to the right is the former ROW of the Ripley Branch. At this location was the junction with the River Line.

[40]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 12:58:58 - 'CSX_at_Millwood_south.jpg' 147 KB
This southbound view looking towards Point Pleasant and Huntington shows both a passing/storage siding along with the spur to the Westvaco operation.

[41]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 13:00:26 - 'Westvaco_Millwood.jpg' 167 KB

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 13:03:44 - 'Ripley_Branch_roadbed_Millwood_2.jpg' 153 KB
The former Ripley Branch ROW moving away from Ripley Landing. In the distance is WV Rte 2. The line crossed the road and turned north to parallel Mill Creek on to Ripley.

[43]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 13:14:11 - 'Ripley_Branch_roadbed_Cottageville.jpg' 188 KB
Approximately two miles from Millwood, the Ripley Branch passed through the sleepy hamlet of Cottageville. This shot looks west(towards Millwood) on the ROW beside the former location of Union High School.

I hope to get more photos of this former ROW in the fall once the leaves are gone. The brush is thick along this route and distinct shots are nearly impossible to get.

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 13:20:24 - 'BO_at_Letart_north-2.jpg' 172 KB
Just south of Millwood along the Ohio River is the town of Letart. This view looks north on CSX(B&O) trackage.

[45]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 13:25:16 - 'BO_at_Letart.jpg' 158 KB
A view south at Letart. The gravel operation has been existence for years but does not appear to use the RR. The spruced up whistle post is a nice touch. Sure wish Q316/317 would have been passing through for this sequence.

[46]

Re: B&O at Millwood - By DannyR on 08/01/03 at 13:29:32 - 'BO_at_Letart_south.jpg' 171 KB
This view also looks south at Letart where the railroad and US 33 part. The Racine Locks on the Ohio River are approximate one mile south from here(highway). The church is a Letart landmark.

How many cars and what types do they own (or owned)?
Thanks in advance!

Here are some shots of the then Norfolk and Western ROW I took in 1981. These are south of Kenova in the vicinity of Ft. Gay, if my memory is correct. That is US 52 and obviously, some wonderful tangents for train speed and photos.

Re: Best places to visit & shoot on the Pokey..... - By Robbman on 08/11/02 at 14:08:45 - 'LitwarWVCPLbridge.JPG' 495 KB
Very few center sidings are still in use.  There is one at Elkhorn, WV in use and at Capels, WV.  The rest are usually filled with hoppers.  Amazingly enough, in Litwar, WV there is a crossover in the middle of a center siding, still guarded by full CPL bridges.

Re: Bluefield - By DannyR on 01/11/05 at 22:14:03 - 'Bluefield_Yard_west.jpg' 137 KB
Speaking of the December visit, I'll add a few photos here from that stop. A couple of these are posted elsewhere on this forum:

This bridge view is at the heart of the Bluefield yard looking east. The engine servicing rack and the old coaling tower are clearly visible. A lease unit EMD with number #838 and a "whiteface" NS SD70M are the motive power at the moment along with a C40-9W "catfish" at the tower. The yard caboose can also be seen and is the one that appears in a photograph above.

Two coal trains are currently tied down.

Here is the headend of both coal trains taken from another bridge (The one seen in the distance on the previous photo)

GEs on the points---one train appears ready while the other is in the process of a crew change. This shot gives testimony to taking west facing photos here and especially with the low winter sun.

Images from Cass.  Unsure of the date on these photos, but I'm thinking its close to or maybe the same year as your photos Danny.  If anything can be added about these locos would be interested in hearing the commentary.  Is #7 there ever to be restored?  When I took this picture they were saying it was to be refurbished, and that was over a decade ago.  Would be really neat to see her chugging again though.  I think that bottom loco is the ex-Army 2-8-0, is it not?  Any future plans for this unit?

This one doesn't go with the rest, but wanted to add it.  Taken in the 1970s, it shows the cars when they were still all green.  Since I know the photographer I guess I could ask them myself.  However, one must have leaned dangerously far out of the window to get an angle like that!

By the way, I was off (way off ) on the date of these photos.  Taken in late summer 1986, when I was but a wee lad.

A few more photos here from the train.

This photo here has a small anecdote behind it, and one I shall never forget.  Just after this photo was taken, and while still loitering in the open air car, the lead Shay there decided to blow it's whistle...  To say I was startled would be an understatement.  Although too young to speak in "French", if I was able, I'm sure I would have spoken it fluently that day!

A good photo here of #2 and #5

My favoritest photo of the collection.  Although just a closer shot of the previous photo, I think this one shows real power, almost as if the two are alive and breathing.

Thanks for the kind words Danny.  Here is one more showing Heisler #6 and the little GE switcher.  Is this little switcher still in service?

Heres another one from '86.  Sorry for the staticy and fuzziness of the photo.  It was extremely fuzzy, and this is what I could come up with to help that out.

These next two were taken at a later date, in the early 1990s I believe, maybe '93 or '94.  A good shot of #4 here.

Another one from my all-time collection.  "ALL ABOARD!" and off they go up the mountain.  I believe #2 was the lead unit in this climb, with #5, which is actually the lead unit but will detach and head back down after the run is completed to Whitaker.  One can only wonder how many times these two (and the rest of the WVaP&P gang) have went "up and back, up and back" these mountains before and since this photo.

Continuing on, we go back to the year of another picture posted on this thread, 1979, which could appropriately be entitled, Cass: The Early Years.  Although in operation over a decade by the time of these photos, compared to how long the line has been in operation to present, I think the title fits well.

This photo is very indicative of the first, I'm guessing taken moments later.

Sorry about the quality of these next photos, I tried to help them as much as I could.

This one, again, very indicative to the previous, taken only moments before or later.

Good shot of #2 here coasting away down the mountain.

And finally, a surprise I didn't expect to find.  #7 taken nearly a decade earlier, but still in a dismal state.  She does have a few more parts on her though!

One more I found here, however, this one as you probably already know is from 1974.  Again, sorry about the quality of the photo.
