I like to take a road trip on Memorial Day weekend. This year's trip was a return to Horseshoe Curve and Altoona Works, with an interesting detour beforehand. The Nittany & Bald Eagle RR operates a former PRR cluster that icnludes a brnach form Tyone to Lock Haven. I got off the expressway just in time to see NBER interchanging with NS on a wye at the south end of the line.

Seeing NBER was a nice achievement. It was my first time seeing them. With that being said, my main goal was Horseshoe Curve. This was another first- I hiked up to the back side of the curve.

As you may have noticed, I didn't post all the angles I normally shoot for each train. This was done in the interest of saving Henry some bandwidth, as well as tiem for me. If you'd like to see the rest of each train, please visit:

I've been to the Curve dozens of times ~ had my picture taken with the East portals of the tunnels behind me, slashed through 2' of fresh snow in a Dodge sedan to visit MG, and walked better than a mile up the Hill from the Brickyard Crossing, but never did I hike the outside of the Curve

excellent work

Thank you kindly! I went back to the Hoseshoe Cruve the following day to shoot from the park itself. The first train arrived right after I did!

No trip to the area would be complete without a look at Altoona works!

The SD90MAC rebuild program continues:

Not the greatest shot, but one can see a couple of the NS F units:

The north 8th Street bridge is just around the corner, which allowed for a nice vieew of a rather bust yard:

Westbound NS intermodal:

High nose GP38-2s were working east of the bridge at first, but then pulled a strong of cars over to the western portion of the yard:

An eastbound mixed freight departing:

One more look at Altoona Works- over by the turntable:

A slide show of the shop and yard:

All photos in this post and the link were taken by me Saturday 5/28/2016 in Altoona, PA. I wrapped up shooting shortly after 2 PM owing to approaching showers and thunderstorms, then headed back to NY. I hope y'all enjoy seeing this pictorial as much as I did shooting it.
