Double dip- WCOR and TIOC

I spent a pleasant fall day in PA's Northern Tier several weeks ago. The attraction was the former NYC Corning Branch, which is now home to the Wellsboro  & Corning RR (freight) and Tioga Central RR (excursions). This line has enjoyed a recent boom due to a surge in gas drilling in the area.

The main WCOR yard was already busy when I arrived, as a pair of recently acquired SD40-2s were shuffling hoppers, a passenger coach and a display boxcar.

Wow.......nicely done! Such a beautiful area down there. Looking forward to the excursion shots. Am I correct that there is a walking/hiking trail south of the end-of-track to Jersey Shore, Pa? Or at least part of the abandoned track?

Thanks,

Charlie

Thank you! Since you raised the subject, which was discussed briefly in the Erie/EL GTL thread, let me explain where the trail is relative to the existing tracks.

Here is the northern leg of the wye, which stores a few passenger fars, a couple freight cars and RS1 #62.

The southern leg of the wye can be seen in the background at right in this shot.

Here is a shot of the west of the wye, where the legs converge:

The tracks end at the edge of Route 287:

This is where the trail starts on the other side of State Route 287. The trail runs down to the Jersey Shore/Williamsport area on the old NYC Corning Branch/Fall Brook RR ROW.

The tracks do not end at wellsboro Junction. Although I didn't photograph the operation itself, I caught #5o6 idling as the crew prepared the local for a trip into downtown Wellsboro, where WCOR service a glass plant.

Now, let's take a look at that excursion train. My first hint of a possible run was when #307 was fired up in the early afternoon.

A short time later, a van backed up to the excursion consist so chef Shannon and his crew could begin loading the kitchen car.

I've met Shannon before and found him to be a great ambassador for the RR. He kindly let me know the excursion would run at 1 PM (snacks only) and 5 PM (full dinner train). I chose to chase the former, which departed the yard promptly at 1 PM.

The chase was on! The next 3 shots were taken from the edge of Route 287 as the excursion journeyed northward. The train operated pull-pull, with SD40-2 #309 leading the northbound leg of the trip and SD40-2 #307 as the trailing unit.

The next shot was taken at Muck Road:

The northbound Tioga Central RR excursion approaches and crosses Route 4039:

North of the crossing, the tracks shift to about 10 miles of ROW built by Conrail in 1977 to bypass a flood control project. The SDs were getting a  work out as they climbed up the 1% grade.

The train passed along the west shore of Hammond Lake (created by the flood control project) and stopped there so the passengers could enjoy the view.

Since the train operated pull-pull, the crew walked down to #307 and restarted her for the journey back to Wellsboro Junction.

The Tioga Central RR excursion heads southbound through the Tioga River valley.

I ended the chase at Route 4039:

All photos in this post were taken by me Friday 10/19/2012 in Holliday, PA. Since I had a few shots I wanted to take on the other side of the border (in NY), this was a good place to end the chase. I hope you have enjoyed it. As always, a big thanks goes out to the nice folks who work for the Wellsboro & Corning/Tioga Central RR.

Bucket list? Wellsboro Jct is about 2 1/2 hours from Rochester (NY). Unless your health is an issue, I strongly recommend you visit WCOR/TIOC soon. It's a great operation.

The Tioga Central uses a mix of ex-CN, GTW, Budd and NYC c0oaches on its trains. For individual coach history, please visit: http://www.tiogacentral.com/equipment.cfm

No, I know it's not too far. I just mean there are so many places I want to get to see--and most aren't really far away. It's just getting the opportunity and time. Health-wise the thing holding me back is my spine issues, but that can be enough sometimes with riding long distance in a car.
