The only SD38 that can be considered to be "stationed" in Greenville is 866. It appears to be a system wide spare unit and is sent to Conneaut or Butler when an SD38 there comes to Greenville for FRA Inspections. This occured earlier this year when 867 was sent to Greenville for inspection and 866 took over 867's duties at Butler for just a few weeks. However for some reason they have started using 866 as mainline road power in the last week...

good to see  38's getting some action. Would the increase traffic be a reason for 866 being called into action? i have noticed hearing a few more trains then normal for the past month, and if this is so maybe the will give us the two tunnels back from the missabe? wishfull thinking.

There may be a slight increase in traffic. It would be cool if 909 and 903 came back, but who could complain if they sent DM&IR T-Motors, SD38-2s, or SDMs down here. A WC SD45 would be cool too!

B&LE 905 South at Kremis @ 8:30 PM. 866 is the third unit. They stopped for a red signal at Kremis and went from idle  to notch 8 in just a few seconds and boy was 866 the loudest of them all!! Train is headed for Butler and should be there within the hour.

They should have come back north about an hour after you saw them...

BLE 866 left GV at 10:20 PM headed north to Conneaut. Train should arrive in Greenville again around 5 AM. It is possible it may continue south after that, but I do not know.

Super. Everynight I hear a train between 9 and 10, then normally another an hour later. I take it thats what you ment. every night they take a train to butler then turn back to greenville? If this is so would these be scrap and other materials for Ak?

Maybe not every night, I do see them in the day quite often too. If its an ore train going to North Bessemer it won't be back for more like 2 hours.

At Greenville today was this southbound. I caught him off Wasser Bridge Road. Here he was reversing to pick up some cars in the yard below.

Once he was clear of the crossing  I parked and waited for him to come back up the grade.

From there back to Conneaut but little going on there. 868 was moving cars about but this was the closest he got to me.

Nice pics Rob!
I saw these guys around 6:30ish in Albion. Apparently they went past me here in Greenville without me even knowing it after coming back from Butler around 2. They went light to Conneaut to get ore and we caught them at Albion and followed them home to Greenville. They tied up at Kremis and they were slated to head to XB at 9:30 this evening. Should be getting close to Butler by now.
I was REALLY close to going to see that train you took pics of. Since it wasnt 866 leading and my dad had other plans. (2 more months, then I can finally do this chasing myself! LOL)
Lemme know next time you are in town and I will tell you what's coming to and leaving Greenville, on the NS and BLE.

Sounds like once you get that car Bob, I can see high miles on it already. Hope your old man is sympathetic? LOL I'm sure he is but watch those train chases. It's easy to get caught up in them and exceed the speed limit. I'm guilty of that. I tore out of Greenville so fast last week trying to get ahead of the train I know I broke a few laws. Senses took over once I reached Adamsville. No train is worth the cost of a ticket or even worse, a wreck.

Criminey, reading that I probably sounded like your dad. Sorry.

If I plan anymore trips to Greenville, maybe we can exchange phone numbers offline beforehand. With the holidays coming up though, my time in Greenville will be limited.

Already have the car, I just need to get the full license and lose the permit.
You didnt sound like dad in your post lol. In fact dad doesnt get on me too bad about speeding occasionally when trying to beat them to a crossing or something. (Probably because he knows I have seen him do the same thing when train chasing?) The only ones that are hard to chase are northbounds. As long as I do the speed limit I can get southbounds pretty easy for the most part. I think people think they are going faster than they really are. They only did 35 through Conneautville last night but it seemed faster.
I think 866 is getting ready to go north now. Cya later.

Noticed more rail removal on the siding between grove city and slippery rock. Ive seen the same thing happening on the DM&IR. any reason cn is having all this rail lifted? And again the two missing tunnels are on the Iron Range. Always with an old sdm on lead. Which brings up the question why?

Was on sd45.com and noticed some pics of the great old power on the B&LE. I thought tunnels were my favorite locos on the bess, but now im loving the other style of paint seen on the old RSD15's and other old locos on the line. Anybody interested in these or know any facts and pics?

The best online place for photos of diesels long ago retired is the Fallen Flag site. Here's the link to the Bessemer diesel page and one pulled from the site (Bill Navari Collection),  http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ble/ble-dies.html
