Title: Plow Extra?
Post by roc on Jan 11th, 2018, 12:52pm
Went through Corry and Union City yesterday and noted that the line appears to have been plowed + flanged for snow before Wednesday. Was this a special move or just tacked onto the front of the regular East-West turn?

Most likely M&W used a ballast regulator to clear the ROW for the upcoming storm.

Regulators have proven to be great for snow when normal track repairs are sidelined by winter weather.

If the plow traces were scooped / round, I'd agree, but these were angular. FWIW saw a B&P ballast regulator, and its round wings, plowing at Union City, which was my "ah ha" moment.

Doesn't mean I'm not wrong, but does anyone know definitively?

Well I guess for now we just speculate.

Doesnt seem this board gets much attention anymore. The WNYP Yahoo group is dead....

I'll keep my ears open, last time I was up there the two plows were OOS and needed work.

Twice in the span of a few days or weeks (my drive in to work is blurring together these days) I've seen MOW crews in Niobe with what appears to be the ballast machine, oriented to head south...towards Corry. I would assume that this is what went on.

I don't know what shape the plow is in if there was a big snow storm. I know I painted it with a brush 10 years ago, the paint faded...and it's possible its ability to be used faded just as much.

Thanks Pablo,

Another thing to take into consideration about a plow extra is it requires a train crew to make it happen.

After all the changes at the WNYP they are running about as thin as they can with people in train service.  A plow extra would mean they end up probably being over 40hrs for two a couple guys and that has been a huge NO NO on the WNYP for a long time.
