Figured this group doesnít have a generic pic thread yet so I would give it a shot.  Ill Start with the B&H 422
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jul 18th, 2011, 8:03pm
Iíve been very lucky. I have only stopped in Painted post once before while traveling for work and both times I caught NS leaving and the B&H getting ready to head out of town with in 10min of getting there. Today was another good day with a friendly bunch from the B&H.

Came across some pics from early last summer 2010. First pic spotting cars at Dads Pet Food in Meadville

The 421 backing out of Dads
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jul 25th, 2011, 10:14am
Lighting not the best, the 421 is crossing French Creek. This is the former B&LE Meadville Branch
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jul 25th, 2011, 10:16am
Back on WNYP tracks (EL, CR, NS) WNYP 300 is leading the shove back into the yard.
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jul 25th, 2011, 10:17am
and last for now, just another days work for this Alco
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jul 25th, 2011, 3:14pm
Well according to the tag on the pic, this was taken in March of 08.  Meadville PA.
Posted by: Lfire83 Posted on: Jul 25th, 2011, 7:08pm
Great shots, towny! Especially the run down the ex B&LE Vallonia Branch to Dads Dog Food, I have never seen that move in all the times I've been to Meadville.
Posted by: centercab Posted on: Jul 26th, 2011, 9:54am
Nice shots! Is #426 a ballasted unit and caused some rail problems on one of the branch lines?
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jul 26th, 2011, 2:31pm
Yes the 426 has extra ballast added for its previous life in yard service for the Belt Railway. She proved to be a little too heavy for the Oil City Branch out of Meadville. Still in service last I heard for the WNYP but just limited to where she can go.  Got a few more pics I found, Iíll have to crop and resize.
Posted by: Lfire83 Posted on: Jul 26th, 2011, 6:33pm
I liked this thread so much I dug up some shots I took a few months ago while on a short trip to NY. The OL and ME locals met and swapped trains in Falconer in the afternoon, with a good show of Alco power.

630 and 4228 on the Meadville local running east into Falconer, seen at Tiffany St in Jamestown.
Posted by: Lfire83 Posted on: Jul 26th, 2011, 6:39pm
The Meadville local ready to head west, both crews taking lunch in the Falconer shop.
Posted by: Lfire83 Posted on: Jul 26th, 2011, 6:41pm
430 and 431 eastbound with the Olean local.

Excellent work, gents! Thanks for sharing.
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jul 30th, 2011, 2:30pm
Found this guy, actually got this one off a print I had made. Not sure of date, location is Meadville for sure. 421 and 426 resting in the yard.
Posted by: Lfire83 Posted on: Jul 30th, 2011, 9:24pm
My guess would be mid summer of 2006, judging by the brand new paint on 421. 426 and 421 were assigned there at that time, while 424, 430, 431, and 432 were out of Falconer.

Here's one you folks dont see often.  From a few years back, just before Barilla came to Avon..   LA&L #20
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Dec 30th, 2011, 10:28am
Been a while since we got some new stuff, made it up to the WNYP to get some pics of the OC Branch move. Here is 421 coming into Sugar Creek, PA.  Cold and Snow + Alcos = a good day....
Posted by: centercab Posted on: Dec 30th, 2011, 6:19pm
Nice shot! Like the winter scene. How many cars did she have in tow? Are there any grades on that branch which could be a challenge to a single unit with a heavy train?
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Dec 31st, 2011, 10:11am
The train had about a dozen cars when it got to Franklin. I am only speaking from speculation, but I think the line for the most part is fairly level. It follows Sugar Creek almost the entire way to Franklin from there it follow the Allegheny River up to Oil City. It looked as if there is some grade around the old refineries just north of OC, but we caught them there as well and with 4 cars in tow and operating at 5mph on the bad track the unit was nothing but a bit above idle.

Late 2011 - November or December, on a Friday morning, I caught the LA&L returning empty hopper (correction) cars from Genesee Junction to Rochester & Southern's Brooks Ave. yard. †Heading back to home rails at Beahan Road:

Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Feb 2nd, 2012, 10:58pm
Ah, very nice bob you got the 418....

On a side note the 428 is lacking side number and a road name. Not sure if this is just an interchange rule or not but I am surprised the LAL doesn't have stencil on the cab side

Good point, VTM. I didn't know the LA&L handled salt traffic. The hoppers probably came from Barilla, King Kole Bean or ADM.

A thousand pardons. †By the time I arrived at Beahan Rd, the train was deep in the yard. †I saw hoppers, made a rash assumption that they were salt cars.
Where would the empties from Barilla go from Brooks Ave, to Silver Springs?

If I'd a known you were on board, VTM, I'd a paid closer attention.  Were you on this run?  Guess the date.

LOL.......judging by the types of cars surrounding, I would say 1973.

I'm sure others can narrow down the further details.

Yes, the R&S would take the hoppers to Silver Springs for interchange with NS.

Thanks Matt............I've gotta tell you though, it wasn't totally planned that way. I was waiting on the south sidewalk at the crossing for awhile, waiting for the train. My car was parked at MacGregor's, and I thought I had enough time to get in and park at Pickle Nick's.

WRONG!

I heard that "Alco rumbling" as I was not far from the car and I scampered back as close as I could get and zoomed in a bit..........and there's my shot! It's funny how those accidental shots turn out well sometimes!

You know something..........and this just dawned on me. I just realized that every single time I have seen the Livonia, Avon and Lakeville's trains, their power is ALWAYS spotless! I know they aren't going to get the ugly "road-grime" that a long-haul carrier's power would get, but it shows how "1st Class" the LA&L by the way they keep their power neat and tidy.

Mike and Hannah- Great job and am glad that someone got those snow pictures! Thought about that as I worked in it and was wishing I was trackside instead.
It has been a while since we had enough snow for great 'blast through'.
Only captured one good blast through which was at Martin Rd a few years back. Again I'm glad for those photos!

Love seeing the 416 out and about
Posted by: centercab Posted on: Jan 12th, 2014, 1:17pm
I would like to see an RS-3 or two aquired but most likely they are regarded as too old and not worth the trouble. Classic old engines just the same! Current roster should be enough to satisfy any ALCO lover.
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jan 12th, 2014, 1:47pm
Id like to see the 417 come down and do some work on the "Branch" to Oil City....

Like you said, the line already should keep any Alco fan happy and I am.

Maybe they want to stick with the 251 variant vs the older 244.. And so not as many of the "older"Alcos?
Posted by: Alcofan Posted on: Jan 12th, 2014, 2:06pm
The Family of LA&L,B&H, WNY&P will always be powered by ALCO 251 engines. The only exception is LA&L 20 and 72.
The 417 needs work before it can be put into service again and then it is scheduled to be assigned to Olean, NY for local service.

It should be noted that the B&H also has a pair of 539-powered S1,#s 4 and 5.

Yes, RS-3s! But, are any for sale or worthy of repair? I think most are in museums or just scrap material.
Posted by: Alcofan Posted on: Jan 12th, 2014, 10:51pm
Don't forget the Delaware -Lackawanna Railroad who owns 5 RS-3's. Most are in operation daily.
Posted by: centercab Posted on: Jan 13th, 2014, 12:00am
It would be so historic to see a pair of RS3's all decked out in LA&L paint assigned to do the honors when the Traveler is called up for a trip! But in reality they are a serious railroad and not a rolling museum, yet how goes the saying,  "hope springs eternal" for they do have a thing for orphan ALCO's

At present, the boiler for engine 38 is stored at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Ridgeley, West Virginia. It is undergoing repairs as time and resources permit. There is no deadline or schedule for completion of the work and the engine is not available for public inspection.

#14?? Appears trucks have been serviced at least to some extent showing fresh paint on them. Wonder if final paint scheme might be like #5?? How much mechanical work remains to be done before she's road-ready.

Are the units shut down, but nonetheless ready to start via hot start (yellow cabling)?

With remote control, does that mean the Centuries have 1 man crew?
Posted by: towny72 Posted on: Jun 11th, 2016, 11:54am
the remote unit you seen on the front of the unit is interchangeable.

Essentially any locomotive with MU capabilities can become a remote unit.

Usually when a unit is remote it is a one man crew, used for switching not main line activity.

From any B&S fans:

Western New York & Pennsylvania RR: Belvidere, NY

the WNY&P bridge under Rt 19

the stone abutment by the bridge was for the original Buffalo & Susquehanna bridge that was at this location before the highway was re-routed onto the B&S grade

That was an really active valley with the Erie, B&S and the PS&N all running close by.

Did the B&S cross the Erie at grade level? Angle of the old abutment would indicate it did.

I remember seeing a picture of the lines crossing at grade, but can't locate it now. Does anyone know the name of the tower/junction or railroad town name?
Posted by: centercab Posted on: Feb 7th, 2017, 10:09pm
Roc, that would be a picture well worth seeing. My Grandfather rode those B&S rails in his career that began in the early 1900's. As a kid I remember stored away in his cellarway after he retired his extra large "Buffalo trip" lunch pail. I always wanted it but it disappeared after his death.

I searched for more than an hour and couldn't find it. There are so many amateur photo and history sites that I can't recall and that don't get updated (i.e. poor chance of showing up in Google or sites with crap search like Yahoo, Facebook, or this site for that matter).

1k attaboys to the intrepid foamer that can track it down.

B&S crossed overhead at this location

VTM
Posted by: centercab Posted on: Feb 15th, 2017, 5:18pm
Great find VTM! The height of the bridge would indicate another abutment might have been located to the rear (camera) side of the remains in the modern photo supporting the open trestle side of the overpass. I have seen several B&S overpasses along the line through Pennsylvania and New York state. Obviously they did not care for grade level crossings if they could avoid it.
Any idea what used the girder supported bridge in the background? If I could get the exact location or coordinates it might be interesting to see on google earth.

Bridge in the background would be the old RT 19.

Thank you for the direction. Sad to see no trace of the B&S. Time moves on and the landscape changes with it.

As some of you know, I am leaving Photobucket owing a serious rate hike. My photos are being downloaded to Photobucket as time permits. With that in mind, let's do a little TBT and take a look at this LA&L chase from 6 years ago.
