What's going on here?

On October 10, 2016 I went to Painted Post to check out the NS-Bath and Hammondsport interchange and noticed that the H85 was going west with the gas cars to be picked up by the B&H.  The train pulled into the former WCOR water train yard, cut off from the train, and proceeded to the dike where the B&H cars were there waiting to be picked up.  The train then pulled down Chemung Street, as usual, through the Dresser Rand Plant, and proceeded forward into Gang Mills Yard.

Again, on 10-14-16, more cars from the B&H that are at the dike ready to be picked up by the NS. They were sometime by 10-15-16.

QUESTION:  How did B&H cars get there? There has been no sign of B&H power in Painted Post since before 10-10-16.

They still would have had to push the cars to that point.  Once the cars are at the dike there is no way to run around. They do come in to pick up the NS drop at the water yard most likely at night, this I understand.  What I don't understand is how they deliver their cars to that point. They would have to push them, it seems to me. "It is a puzzlement."

So today, October 17, 2016, NSH85 once again delivered cars for the Bath and Hammondsport into the former WCOR water yard.  Note the gates are open, and the hopper buffer is on the west end.

I, least of all haven't any idea about what's really happening but,is it possible NS & B&H have changed their exchange points and along with scheduling for whatever reason at least temporarily?? Possibly maintenance going on?

I think you're onto something. Using the wye does tie up the mainline. Also, there are times when the crew of NS H85 is just too busy to interchange with the B&H when they arrive.  using the siding in Painted Post may allow the two RRs to interchange at their own pace- just like the LA&L does with CSX at Genesee Junction.

Then again, this may be a temporary thing while the B&H does some trackwork.

This was the dance today, October 10, 2016.

Earlier today, the B&H picked up a cut of cars delivered to the water track by the NS from Gang Mills Yard. Then went west.  Then later in the day, around 3:00pm NSH85 delivered a second cut of gas cars to the former WCOR water yard track....rsp

Thanx for the update, Richard. I plan to chase the B&H at last once (and possibly twice) next month, so your info is handy.

I certainly have no "inside" information but it would seem to me that this is a busy time of year for the Savona operation with product coming out of storage and more shipping traffic as a result.  What this looks like is good coordination of in-bound and out-bound shipments between the two RRs w/o tying up the Tier main or adding more traffic to Gang Mills.  Perhaps when traffic slows down in late winter they will go back to the "old" way of interchanging.  Nice use of existing but apparently little used storage track.

For the time being, most if not all of the action that takes place during the NS/B&H interchange happens at the west end of the former WCOR water yard....rsp

After my own experience with the B&H last week, I'm starting to think the revised NS/B&H interchange could be a long term or even permanent thing.

The power for NS h85 went west of the dike to fetch a spacer car. This is the 1st time I've ever seen NS go west of the dike.

After dropping the space, NS h85 went west of the dike again to fetch a string of tank cars fro mthe B&H:

Meanwhile, the B&H sent a pair of C424ms into town to fetch tank cars from the water track:

My in-depth slide show of the interchange:

All photos in this post and the link were taken by me Friday 11/11/2016 in Painted Post, NY.
