Chasing the B&H 40 years later...

I moved to Hammondsport on May 30th, 1976. I saw the B&H in action a few days later. if someone had told me what the RR would look like 4 decades later, I wouldn't have believed them. While the original mainline north of Bath is missed, the rest of the RR appears to be doing well. Thus it was with a bit of nostalgia that I chased the B&H last week.

Former Tioga Central S2 #14 has been moved, so she might have gotten a bit of TLC recently:

The S2 was coupled to S1 #5, one of two B&H Alcos on the rosters 40 years ago. She still runs today.

All photos in this post were taken by me Friday 6/17/2016 in Coopers Plains, NY. Owing to construction on Route 415, I could chase the train no further. A big thanks goes out to the employees of the B&H being professional and friendly.

Big difference with the old B&H for sure. Looks like it was a good day for chasing - thanks for posting.

You're welcome! No doubt there will be someone 40-50 years from now who looks back fondly on the current version of the B&H as their childhood RR.

Matt, you've covered the Painted Post exchange for a while now, is the flagman a NS employee who motors over from Gang Mills?  Doesn't look like he is part of either crew.

A little off topic, but since loaded cars are permitted through the middle of Painted Post, how can there be a problem with the proposal for similar cars heading south over the Glen gorge bridge on the Corning Secondary from Reading Center?  Just saying, I guess.

So the first ideas that came into my mind is two things: a. A bridge weight restriction or a hazmat restriction put in place for a lot of different reasons including NIMBY outcry.  Painted Post, having its own yard across the river (Gang Mills)on has a large quantity of hazmat cars shipped through, where as going out the Secondary does not.

As I understand things, there currently is no restriction on the bridge but those opposed to the Reading Center proposal would like to see one put in place.  There is the option of northbound from Reading Center (assuming the anti's don't get the Big Stream bridge declared off-limits) but that isn't as efficient operationally and it ultimately reduces business for NS.

He is a B&H employee. In fact, he has also seen me chase the LA&L in Henrietta.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the Reading Center bridge to give you an accurate answer.

Thank you kindly. I miss they way things were back in the day, but the current B&H operation is quite nice.
