WNYP RS-3m number 406 will come out of the Olean, NY shop Monday evening at 6 PM.  All are welcome to attend a brief ceremony commissioning the unit for WNYP service.  The 406 has received a number of upgrades and repairs while in the WNYP shop, such as, ditch lights, camera/DVR and alerter systems added, MU system restored, all engine and electrical systems checked, water and oil leaks repaired, wheels trued, window glazing upgraded to FRA Type II,  turbo repaired, unit repainted, renumbered and lettered.

This unit began life in September of 1952 at the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, NY as Delaware & Hudson model RS-3 number 4112, one of 31 such units owned by the D&H.  Its frame number was 80312 and it was built with a model 244 12-cylinder, 1600 h.p. engine.  In 1975 it was shipped to Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, ID where it was rebuilt along with seven of its sister units into a model RS-3m upgraded to 2000 h.p. with a model; 251 12-cylinder engine.  It returned to the D&H in March of 1976 as number 1976, one of two D&H units in red, white and blue bicentennial garb.  Some years after the bicentennial it was renumbered to its proper series as the D&H 506.  It was subsequently became the Tioga Central 506, then Wellsboro & Corning 506 and found its way to the WNYP in October 2014.

Photos to be posted after tomorrow's unveiling.

Many have inquired what colors it is painted.  Her colors will have to remain a secret until tomorrow evening. Many fans know the answer because they have seen her in various stages during the repair. We sincerely appreciate their agreeing to keep the secret. Our MOE department has really put heart and soul in this project!

BTW, when I said D&H had 31 RS-3's I knew it didn't sound right.  The real number is more like 99 or 101 depending on how you count ownership.  D&H also had around 27 RS-2's.

Carl, your making it a mystery!  406 is to be a surprise!   Traffic by the Olean yard will be unusually heavy with all the rail fans doing a drive by!

That is a nice looking RS3.   I recall from many many years back Erie RS units traveled across the tier.  This unit has cleaned up nicely,  and I believe I am seeing LED Headlights and Ditch Lights on #406  It would be cool to see it teamed up with LAL #20 in use. Has anyone stated what the intended use for this locomotive is?

A thing of beauty. I think it would look great paired with one or both of the railroad's RS18s.

Outstanding!!!! I've been waiting and waiting to see what the talented crew of WNY&P would outshop and it was well worth it Personally would like to see her on the point of an inspection train which would of course include Traveler. That RS-3M is equal in rarity to a 57 Chevy Nomad Station Wagon.
Forgot to ask what is the horn set she is wearing??

The newest member of the LAL/WNYP family, WNYP Alco RS3m No. 406, was unveiled on June 6, 2016 in Olean NY.
The WNYP sent out a notice to various forums around the internet inviting the public to come out for the unveiling! (thanks WNYP!) For 6pm on June 6.

WNYP 406 is an Alco RS3m. She was built new for the D&H in 1952 as a standard Alco RS3, D&H No. 4112, one of nearly 100 RS3's on the D&H. In 1975 she was chosen as one of eight D&H RS3's for rebuilding. They were sent to Morrison-Knudsen and emerged as rebuilt RS3m's, with new prime movers, chopped noses, and other upgrades. The old 4112 returned from M-K as one of two D&H Bicentennial units, number 1976:

She was later renumbered to D&H 506. In 1988 she was sold to the Tioga Central Railroad in Owego, NY, where she would operate as an excursion locomotive. In 1994 she moved with the Tioga Central to Wellsboro PA, and continued her career as an excursion locomotive, still wearing her D&H bicentennial paint!

(It is believed the 506 was the last surviving 1976 bicentennial locomotive still wearing her bicentennial paint, 40 years later) She is also the only survivor of the eight D&H RS3m's.

Then, in 2014, the Tioga Central sold its Alcos. The LAL/WNYP bought the 506 and moved her to Olean. Which leads us up to June 6, 2016, and the unveiling of the 4112/1976/506/406, now refurbished, repainted, renumbered, and ready to go to work for her 3rd owner at the age of 64!

It was an absolutely beautiful day! about 70 degrees, clear sky, bright sun, no humidity..couldn't ask for a nicer evening.
I arrived about 5:30 and some railfans were already gathering:

WNYP Road power is bedded down for the evening:

Mr. Belke and other crew members from the WNYP came out to welcome us, and tell us all about the history of the new locomotive..

And here she comes! the star of the evening, WNYP 406!

Looking sharp in her new LAL black and yellow paint!  :-D

I counted about 20 to 25 visitors:

We got to tour the shop!

406 back in her "stall" for the night:

Back outside for a last look around:

Last shot of the day. Alcos and MLW's still hard at work:

THANK YOU to Mr. Belke and the whole crew at the WNYP for hosting this event!
and thank you for all you do to keep these beautiful machines alive..we all appreciate it!

thanks,
Scot

Great series of photos Scott, thanks for sharing, as you always do.  The WNY&P are very railfan friendly, as long as you sign in, and abide by their rules. Man do they have some Great ALCo's, &MLW's.

Awesome photos!!
Question: the one engine without the number, is that being used for parts or being worked on?
Thanks!

Parts..
that's number 4223. Originally a CP MLW C424. She was assigned the number WNYP 434 "on paper" but never actually wore that number, and now probably never will.. she was providing parts to the 430 the day I was there.
