Let the madness begin..

"Let the madness begin... " is a term my lawyer uses when he sings for an Ozzy Osbourn tribute band. Yes, he really does sing heavy metal on the weekends. (good guy and a railfan, too!) So... when he booked the Blizzard Of Ozz to play in greater Buffalo, I decided to make it a daylong adventure. Trains ruled the day... and music held the night.

My adventure began at Bison Yard. It was interesting to watch auto racks being unloaded.

The yard itself was quiet:

High nose Gp38-2 #5113, a longtime stalwart, was aprked on the other side of the harlem Road bridge:

Out on the Bison Runner, mixed freight 316 had arrived. All 6 engines were running!

This former lease unit was part of 316's power mix. I guess NS is hard-rpessed for power. Why else would an SD40-2 look like this?

Meanwhile, yard job H50 pulled out onto the Bison Runner with a string of auto racks:

H50 meets 316:

The tail end of H50:

After H50 retreated, NS 316 got under way:

Going over the Erie RR bridge:

SD70 #2545 looked a little worn:

The 3rd engine was a GP38-2, sitting right ahead of that odd looking ex-leaser:

A pair of CN widecabs completed the power for 316:

I'm not sure what this is. It was in the consist of NS 316.

Parting shot of 316 as it headed off to Bison Yard:

After NS quieted down, I headed over to Tifft Street. CSX was pretty busy there.

CSX train #1 was an eastbound manifest freight with an elderly CP SD40-2 leading.

The eastbound intermodal stopped at the approach to CP1 and CP Draw. meanwhile, CSX sent out a lone GP40-2 on one of the former Lehigh Valley yard tracks.

When the action at Tifft Street came to a halt, I moved over to Lake Avenue. An eastbound NS intermodal (probably 22K) passes through the clearance detectors:

...and rumbles across GB Diamond:

My day by the tracks concluded with the Bayview Road crossing. An eastbound CSX unit tank train was the first sighting here:

Another westbound CSX auto rack train followed, but it had UP power:

Notice the approaching coal train in the distance:

The coal train halted at the signal while the auto rack train continued its journey:

NS was also active at Bayview Road. I think this train may have been I2K (which is an extra section of 22K).

Meanwhile, another CSX train parked near Bayview Road:

Since the conductor was walking the train, I am wondering if they had an emergency:

This eastbound NS train was a mystery to me. i had no idea they ran unit covered hopper trains into upstate NY, and none of references list a symbol for a train of ths type:

Matthew: I saw most of the trains from the Tifft/ Bayview Rd. shots on the same afternoon from a restaurant in Silver Creek. Seemed like a pretty big backlog of traffic running west that afternoon.
