I took a drive to Hornell and along the Canisteo River valley last Friday.  I found the first (my first) Baltimore MTA light rail car at the shops.

I did a little looking around for history of the Hornell shops, transition dates from one owner to the next.  I thought it a little humorous in one account of startup of Alstom operations that they were obliged to give employees the first day of deer hunting season off as a company holiday.

Driving south on Rt.36, I passed Silk Road Transport, which trucks transit cars to the Hornell shops.  (Meaning, transit cars do not arrive by rail.)  They have a number of NJT and Philadelphia PCC cars on their lot.

I've been scanning slides from 1994 recently, and found one photo of the shops.  I believe this was during operations by Morrison Knudsen (maybe Amerail?).  Not sure whose EMDs these are going to be; obviously ex-C&NW, ex-PC, and ex-Conrail.  I think a couple of these went to Union Pacific after rebuilding.

20 years ago kind of makes you feel old.  Then I realized my first railfan trip to Hornell was 40 years ago.  Here's Boston & Maine RS3 #1508 by the old water tower base, probably acquired for parts.  March 1974...

Nice shots, Bob!

Yes, those were M-K rebuilds at Hornell. They were pretty busy in the mid '90s, as I recall.

B&M #1508 was combined with an ex-Erie RS 3 an ex-D&H RS3 to build EL #1057. EL also recycled the parts they didn't use to build a psuedo-locomotive for trade-in on a new engine.
