My first spring chase of 2014

It started a little cold... but the 1st full day of spring was very fun last week. I spent the day in greater Buffalo, and it was a productive day for trains.

The day started at Tifft Street. CSX put on quite show for me, including this eastbound auto rack train.

The run-through power on CSX in recent months has been quite interesting. This was the first of several CP units I saw. The leased standard EMD was nice, too.

As the auto rack train got up to the signals near the west end of Buffalo Creek Junction, a westbound CSX train was coming off the bridge at CP-1.

The westbound CSX mixed freight had alot of power!

It included several UP units.

The tail end of the westbound CSX mixed freight passes the eastbound auto rack train near Tifft Street.

the tail end of the CSX auto rack train has cleared the Tifft Street bridge, while the front end snakes around a curve on the way to CP Draw.

This eastbound CSX stack train sported a pair of BNSF units, including a rare warbonnet.

This eastbound CSX mixed freight was next. Although the power might seem mundane to some folks, it was nice contrast IMO after seeing a parade of foreign units.

There was another meet, as the eastbound mixed freight passed a short westbound CSX intermodal freight, which also came off CP-1.

The westbound intermodal sported a pair of CP widecabs.

The westbound intermodal was indeed short- the entire train fit between the Tifft Street bridge and the B&P bridge.

Nice photos Matt!

I am thrilled someone saw that Warbonnet and captured it. My son and I drove out to Walden-Galleria mall and I saw it about a 1/2 mile west of the Ransom Rd crossing. Wasn't able to grab a pic so I'm glad you did!

And are those all concrete cross-ties?

Thanx, Charlie! When did you and your son see the warbonnet?

FWIW, those aren't concrete ties. They are wood ties with a thin crust of snow and ice.

After spending a while at Tifft Street, I moved down to GB Diamond, where NS and  BSOR cross. On the way, I caught this eastbound CSX freight parked near the Lake Avenue crossing.

Having seen a couple of FB friends have success setting up on the east side of GB Diamond in the morning, I followed their example. Eastbound NS auto rack train 14T looked much better from this angle, IMO.

This NS MOW truck also came down the former NKP mainline.

Westbound trains, like NS auto rack 287 9shown here), looked much better from my new location, too.

After NS 287 passed, I decided to head back to Tifft Street. By this time, NS local H42 was working at Buffalo Creek Junction.  If you look carefully, there was another NS train creeping in behind it.

H42 departs Buffalo Creek Junction, while the B&P local works in their yard.

NS local H42 heads west on the former NKP mainline. I'm used to seeing those holding ponds with water in them, not ice!

The train seen lurking in the background was westbound NS mixed freight 309, which had a nice BNSF unit leading.

NS 309 was moving more quickly than NS H42, so the longer mixed freight caught  up to the local before they passed under the B&P bridge.

In addition to NS and the B&P, CSX was also quite active. This westbound stack train arrived in the early afternoon.

As I was getting ready to leave, I heard the distant hum of EMD power off the northwest, which announced the approach of this westbound CSX local.

The CSX local came from the ex-Buffalo Creek Ohio Street Yard. it was running down track #17 that CSX (like Conrail before them) used in reference to the line's heritage as a Lehigh Valley Yard track. Yes, I saw a train on LV in Buffalo!

The adventure was far from over. I paid a short cvist to CP Draw, whcih started with this eastbound CSX stack train coming off the bridge.

The CSX stack train passed an NS local, which can be seen at left in this shot.

The CSX stack train is passing through a location called Buffalo Junction, which shouldn't be confused with Buffalo Creek Junction.

Much of Buffalo Creek is frozen, so the shots of CP Draw from the water's edge were quite interesting. A westbound CSXi ntermodal corssed:

Super photos, Matt. I REALLY like the vantage points from your set-up at GB Diamond. Looks like excellent lighting from both directions.

My son and I saw the Warbonnet and trailing "swoosh" unit the very same Saturday, heading east toward the Ransom Road crossing. Unfortunately I wasn't in a good position to stop and get a photo. We crossed the tracks and saw the headlight and when we headed west on Walden Ave, I noticed it was a Warbonnet.

Ended up an "Aw crap" moment where I wish I had been able to shoot that, but was glad you captured it for historical purposes.

Again, you're welcome, Charlie. You've caught on to why I share these pics- anything I catch might matter to somebody out there.

After CP Draw, I paid my first visit to SK Yard. This is a former Erie RR facility that was subsequently used by EL, CR, D&H, CP and now NS. A local freight (possibly H35?) with a pair of ex-PC GP38-2s shoved a  short consist into the yard.

There was no further activity at SK Yard after the local tied down, so it was time to move again. Bison yard was my next destination:

Number 6730 was idling:

NS also had some older EMDs a[rkled at Bison, but they weren't doing anything.

While most of my shots were facing east, I did capture this train west of the Harlem Raod bridge at Bison Yard. I wonder if this was a local destined for interchange with the Depew, Lancaster & Western?

NS 6730 on a light engine move:

After enjoying a dinner break, I finished the day at the Bayview Road crossing. Both CSX and NS are active here. Eastbound NS intermodal 22K was the first arrival.

The last train I saw at Bayview Road (and for the day in general) was an eastbound CSX intermodal freight.
