This eastbound auto rack freight was an interesting mix of CN, CSX and leased power:

This power on this eastbound CSX intermodal seemed rather small after the long and colorful locomotive lash-ups of the previous trains that day.

Amtrak's westbound Empire Service was late, so it ended the visit.

great photos, looks like a busy place to watch trains. I checked the area on google maps and now I know what the bypass is. I wonder how much is left of the old West shore line in upstate NY.

Not very much is left. There's the bypass, and just a stone's throw east of the bypass is a small siding that runs underneath the bridge on Lyndon Rd. just east of Fairport. That's part of the old West Shore and is actually on the grounds of the old icing facilities at Wayneport.

There's part of the old West Shore in use at Macedon where there is a spur that serves a customer.

I'm admittedly not as familiar with the Shore east of this area, so I'll leave that for someone more educated!

Thank you! A few other pieces of the West Shore survive in upstate NY, as follows:

1. The River Line- a CSX freight corridor on the west side of the Hudson River.

2. A short stub (perhaps 2 miles long) is still in place in Cheektowaga. I do not know if CSX still uses it or if it is embargoed.

3. North Yard, which is part of Frontier Yard in Buffalo, was originally a West Shore facility. Frontier was built in 1957 by combining the West Shore yard with a nearby NYC yard and adding a hump.

Any additions to this list are welcome!

My next trip to Chili Junction was.... soggy. A steady rain began falling as I drove there, and it did not end end until later that night.

A westbound CSX mixed freight was the first arrival.

All photos in this post were taken by me Saturday 7/19/2014 in Riga, NY. The eastbound signals had been set-up on the south side of the tracks since my last visit, and i have also found out the signal bridge is going to be removed by CSX this fall.

The next train was an eastbound mixed freight. Like its predecessor, this CSX frieght had alot of power. It was nice to a Nroflk Southern SD40-2 in the mix.

This eastbound CSX auto rack train also had a nice standard cab EMD- the trailing unit.

I've been waiting all year to grab a  westbound CSX freight coming off the West Shore bypass, and I finally got one!

The switch to the West Shore closed, so I figured I wouldn't see another westbound on that line. Wrong! I caught this westbound CSX intermodal at the nearby State Route 259 crossing:

Nice photos, Matt!

Late Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 6th) I stopped for a few minutes by Chili Junction to see if I could catch a train or two. Nothing went through on the main-lines but I did see a rail-train stashed away on the controlled siding between QC-380 and 382. Leader is the 2285, a road-slug rebuilt from a GP30. It's mate is listed as the #6920, a GP40-2 and it appears there is a third unit as well.

You're welcome, Charlie! Nice catch on the rail train. I caught it a few days earlier. Before I share that day, let's take one more look at last month.

This afternoon/early evening was damp... but not a total washout. A westbound UPS train was my first sighting at Chili Junction.

The next train was really interesting. One of the things I enjoy about CSX is their willingness to use older EMDs on raod freights. In this case, it was an eastbound auto rack train with an SD40-3 and a leased SD40-2 for power.

Did I mention the train went down the West Shore Bypass?

Train #4 arrived not longer after Amtrak apssed. This eastbound CSX mixed freight had UP units in the power mix, and also went down the West Shore Bypass.

All right, let's take alook at the CSX rail train. In my case, i caught it being passed by several other trains. The first was a westbound CSX auto rack train:

Nice EMD unit trailing:

The third and final train for this evening was an eastbound CSX mixed freight with a leaser sandwiched between 2 CSX locos:

It also had some miltary trucks and humvees on flat cars:

As some of you know, my favorite shots at Chili Junction are westbound trains coming off the West Shore Bypass. I saw just one for much of the spring and summer... until the middle of last month. My luck changed, and I've seen at least 2 on every visit sonce then.

Indeed, the first of them rolled slowly through the State Route 259 crossing on a sunny afternoon:
