Chili Junction 2014

As the length of day grows, the height and angle of the sun are finally allowing me to get back to a place I love: Chili Junction! I made a happy return there last weekend, and plan to return as often as possible on weekends until the end of summer.

When I arrived, this MOW truck was parked near the tracks. It is here because CSX is doing alot of work along the Rochester Sub, including replacement of signal bridges.

This was a fairly quiet visit, with this eastbound mixed freight being the only CSX train I saw during a 2 hour visit.

I figured the CSX freight headed down the West Shore bypass to make way for Amtrak. While the westbound Empire Service did eventually arrive, it was over an hour behind schedule. Given the absence of other trains, I wonder if there was a delay or bottleneck to the east.

In a word, the 2nd trip to Chili Junction this year was: WET. Rain began to fall during my drive out there on I-490. It was still falling when this eastbound CSX intermodal freight arrived at MP 382:

The final train for this trip was a westbound CSX intermodal freight, which had ALOT of power up front.

All photos in this post were taken by me me at MP 382/Attridge Road on Saturday 3/29/2014 in Riga, NY. The weather deteriorated badly around 6 PM- quickly changing over to sleet and snow. The light was already poor, so I decided to leave. That's OK- I'll be back later this month.

Well, I never did get back to Chili Junction in April, but I've already been there 3 times this month. Let's start with the 1st trip.

CSX has placed a written marking along the edge of Attridge ROad to indicate where new signals will be placed. The signal bridges on either side of the crossing probably won't last much longer.

Train #1 of the day was an eastbound intermodal:

it did go down the West Shore Bypass:

The skies were really looking ominous by the time this eastbound CSX auto rack freight (with a leased SD45) headed down the West Shore Bypass:

A westbound tank train parked on a siding just east of Attridge Road shorlty before the storm hit. CSX had sent a van to pick up the crew.

All photos in this post were taken by me Saturday 5/4/2014 in Riga, NY. I managed to escape before the thunderstorm opened up. When I resume this series, we'll take a look at the departure of the tank train on the following day.

Here's the payoff- westbound CSX unit tank train K011 had the Norfolk Southern's  heritage unit #1073 leading the train. Yes, the PC unit led on a former PC line!
