Conrail & D&H Southern Tier Train Symbols Circa 1990

I am in need of some help with the CR & D&H train symbols that were on the Southern Tier, between Hornell and Buffalo circa 1990.  I am modeling the Tier around Silver Springs in that era and don't remember the train symbols at that time.  The one I do remember is the BUOI/OIBU.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi C&F,

A couple of the stack trains that ran the Tier were TV-300/301/556/590 down to Croxton. I know you mentioned 1990......in '92 or '93, Conrail started that TV-26/DABU combo train that was half stacks and half auto-racks.

I can't speak for the D&H trains that ran to Binghamton though.......can't think of what those symbols are.

I am going to ask about the D&H symbols in the D&H subforum to see if anyone there can help us.

BUOI & OIBU for the CR freights.
D&H was operated by NYSW at that time, and I think BUME/ MEBU was the freight symbol, along with 253/254 for stack trains, but the dispatcher would often call them DHT4 or something like that.
After CP took over the D&H symbols I can remember were 270/271, 558/557, 260/261. I.m sure there were other symbols that I have forgotten.

Does anyone remember the symbol for the D&H salt train that ran to Retsof using the Groveland Secondary?  I believe that train was abolished prior to 1988, but I could be wrong.  After they stopped running directly to Retsof, did they cut it back to Silver Springs?

Thanks for the replies, they are appreciated.

The D&H salt trains were GV-1 (westbound) and GV-2 (eastbound) and they usually ran with power on both ends between Hornell and Griegsville due to a reverse switch at Attica. I believe they stopped running in 1985 when the Silver Springs connection came into use.

Southern Tier freight trains on west end in 1987 would include:
EASTBOUND:
Conrail: TV-300, TV-302, BUOI*, ELOI
D&H: BUEB*, BUAB, BULA*, UB-even# coal trains (P&LE to Bow, New Hampshire), TV94 (called DHT-4 by Conrail or NTV-4 by NYSW)

WESTBOUND:
Conrail: TV-303, TV-301, OIBU*, OIEL
D&H: EBBU*, ABBU, POBU, BOBU, UB-odd# empty coal train, TV99 (called DHT-9 by Conrail or NTV-9 by NYSW)
* denotes daily train.
The NYSW Sealand stack trains were joint Chessie/CSX-D&H-NYSW and could run with power from any of those 3 railroads.
The UB coal trains would often run with P&LE U28Bs and later GP-38/GP38-2s

Southern Tier freight trains on west end in 1992 would include:
EASTBOUND:
Conrail: BUOI
CP (former D&H symbol in parentheses): 270 (BUME freight), 276 (BUME salt), 390 (BUAB), 558, 890 (UB-even#), 892 (PLMT), 252 (HAN-2/DHT-4), 254 (SLN-4/DHT-4C), 260 (NY-10/NTV-4C)

WESTBOUND:
Conrail: OIBU
CP (former D&H symbol in parentheses): 271 (MEBU), 277 (MEBU empty salt), 391 (ABBU), 557, 891 (UB-odd#), 893 (MTPL), 251 (HAN-1/DHT-9), 253 (SNL-3/DHT-9C), 255 (SNL-3/DHT-9C), 259 (NY-9/DHT-9C)

There were also Conrail unit coal trains to Johnson City and Ludlowville, NY, but I am not sure how far west on the tier either of those trains originated.

one87th,

Thank you very much!  I remember the P&LE coal trains including one that I shot on the NKP west of Buffalo.

As far as the ELOI/OIEL, am I correct in remembering that it did not go through Buffalo, but rather, west from Hornel on the current WNY&PA?

Again, thanks for the info!

It didnt happen often, but once in awhile we would get P&LE run-through power between Buffalo and Binghamton..only saw it once or twice between 1984 and 1989:

Yes, C&F, my mistake. The ELOI/OIEL ran west of Hornell, NY on the "Meadville" line, which would bypass the original segment of line you referred to in your first post, but ran east of there on the remainder of the Southern Tier. I primarily railfanned around the Binghamton, NY area.
I also mentioned that there were Conrail coal trains to Johnson City and Ludlowville, but I am not sure where they switched onto the Southern Tier (Buffalo, Hornell or Corning?) Anyone know?

Scot, nice shots! I saw P&LE power a few times in the late 80s, always at the East Binghamton engine house, and always in grubby weather!

Probably the rarest move on that end of the Southern Tier was on February 17-18, 1987 when the D&H was so power short that they borrowed 4 Genesee and Wyoming units (#50, 45, 63, 51) and ran them on a salt train (symbol BUEB-7x) from Silver Springs to Binghamton.

Somewhat typical consist at the time that the NYSW operated the D&H.

P&LE power also seemed to be a frequent visitor on the coal trains and I caught several of them on the Tier. Even saw P&LE power at SK yard in the early 1990's after the CP started running the D&H.
