Attica Hill meet

I had 4 chases planned for the Southern Tier mainline for February of this year. Two of them were delayed until this month.. but the wait was worthwhile. I wrapped up the NS chase schedule with an interesting day at Attica Hill.

Westbound 309 arrived around mid-morning. This location (MP 384) is next to Dale Road in the Town of Middlebury, NY:

I got ahead of the train and caught it coming down Attica Hill. The train is approaching the East Main Street crossing, and then crossing State Route 238 in Attica, NY:

After 309 passed, I headed up to the Spring Road crossing. Westbound 23K arrived later in the morning and came to a stop about a half mile east of the signals marking MP 389.

Both photos in this post were taken by me Saturday 3/9/2013 in the Town of Alexander, NY.

Eventually, I heard a horn in the distance- an approaching eastbound train. The signals at MP 389 also changed to let 23K depart, so it met NS 13T at the Spring Road crossing.

Noting the double stacks at the head end of 23K, I'm guessing that the Pan Am Southern yard at Mechanicville must be "toupeeing" the train there... since Hoosac Tunnel on the former B&M lacks the clearance for double stacks.

As the two trains pulled away, I realized two things:

1. A westward chase of 23K would be nearly impossible, owing to speed limits in Attica and Alexander.

2. I didn't have any close-up shots of eastbound 13T.

It was a no-brainer to get a few more shots of 13T near the Dale Road crossing, which is MP 380.

All photos in this post were taken by me Saturday 3/9/2013 in Dale, NY. This wrapped up the winter chase season for NS... but have no worries, for spring will bring more days trackside with the Thoroughbred! Until then, I hope y'all are enjoying these shots.

Thank you, Charlie! You did cross my mind when the trains met at the Spring Road crossing, since I know you like that spot.

Now, I don't use a GPS to navigate. I use maps and landmarks. Sadly, a rather scenic barn that let me know I was close to Molasses Hill Road burned down a few days ago.
