The final day of summer

In what is becoming a tradition for me, I went out to Buffalo on the final Friday of summer this year... which was the last full day of summer, as well. Buffalo Creek Junction was active when I arrived, with NS local H0A dropping off a couple cars for the Buffalo Southern RR.

CSX was doing some MOW work on the Chicago Line, so a hi-rail truck was driving back and forth.

Although there had been reports of NS 287 not running this summer, the train passed through Buffalo Creek Junction that morning. A few boxcars were added to the usual consist of auto racks, too.

After a while, the CSX stack train on track 4 of the Chicago Line got under way and slowly passed under the Tifft Street bridge.

The train eventually came to a stop just short of the signals, while MOW crew continued their work on the line.

The back end of the train stretched back to the B&P RR bridge. The hoppers next to the stacks are on a former LV yard track.

With the action quieting down on the early afternoon, I went back to Buffalo Creek Junction ... but it was quiet, too. Norfolk Southern local H0A was idling in the yard.

Resuming the series, I went back to Lake Avenue around mid-afternoon. A number CSX freights passed through the area, including an eastbound auto rack train.

Mr primary focus at that point was NS, which graced me with an eastbound manifest freight.

The power for this train (which might have been 14M) approaches GB diamond:

Crossing Lake Avenue:

The tail end of the train heads up the ex-NKP mainline:

I also saw NS local H0A that afternoon, crossing GB diamond at a much later time than I've seen it in the past.

SD40-2 3202 returned light in the afternoon after dropping off the cars in nearby Hamburg. I hadn't noticed the unit was a high hood until she got to the Lake Avenue crossing:

It was refreshing to see a standard cab leading Norfolk Southern's eastbound  22K at Bayview Road.

A distant horn alerted me to a distant NS train crossing Rogers Road, which is a couple miles west of Bayview Road.

When the NS train got to the Bayview Road crossing, I saw that was a stack train... which would probably terminate at Bison Yard.

I'd never seen a Somerset train on this part of CSX before- I caught the empty hoppers heading westbound on track 3 of the Chicago Line.

Great shots again, Matt.........question: On your photo of the high-hood SD40-2, is that some kind of a high car detector near GB diamond?

Also........Bayview Rd crossing is really a cool place to see a load of action! And the one thing I have noticed about that ex-NKP line is that it really has had an uneven profile in places and that shot at Rogers Rd really shows it. Gotta wonder how many green-horn engineers have suffered "pull-aparts" over the years on this line? :-P
