CRC Caledonia New Construction - By TB_Diamond on 10/17/16 at 12:37:07 - 'IMG_3318_729x547.jpg' 41 KB
Stopped by CRC (Purina) just west of Caledonia, NY back on Oct. 4 during a trip to the northeast. A new mill is presently under construction just compass south of the former mill which was destroyed by a catastrophic fire a few years ago.

A temporary load out is in use to the north of the new construction. The road trucks utilize to gain access to the load out passes the site of the P&L Jct. tower. A LTEX EMD switch loco is currently used at CRC. This replaces the former unit which was destroyed in the fire and which is presently stored in the open at Retsof.

Photo depicts the new construction. View is to the east. The temporary load out can just be made out at the left hand side of the photo.

heavy traffic forces CSX 662 to stop at CP 437 and wait for clearance. It was about this time that NS (ex CR) dash 8 without rolling stock came off the Howard St runner

Here NS 5110 with local freight waits for clearance onto NS line. The Chicago line is the third main line from the top.

It reverses and continues up behind empty auto racks on the north number 5 AD.

the sequence is pretty simple. Yard dogs wait in first photo on east by pass  as hump run is completed. they stay warm as yard worker pulls the plug for next run.

It seems that the old combination of Slug and the GP38-2 have made a return to the Frontier Yard for hump operations

I think it may be because traffic is up substantially and the Sd40's are doing other stuff.
-----
05-08-21
This unit and sd-40's are sharing hump duty and general yard operations. Have night photos of Sd40's on hump and saw this slug unit working the baily end of yard.

Hump yard operations. When in need the hump acts as a yard lead. In this case the Auto max racks are part of the operation.

The end of the day saw three trio of engines use the #3 loop, South engine wye and north wye.
This photo shows one of the trios coming and going:
This group then headed out past the turnout and back to the A/D line to pick up a mixed consist.
The other trios were:
CSX 8418 CSX 8466 CSX 8122
and
CSX 9018 CSX 8449 CSX?

Re: Best Place to railfan in buffalo area? - By wsdimenna on 04/30/04 at 19:39:42 - 'buffalo.jpg' 395 KB
From map:

A few spots:

Foot of Broadway at base of CSX frontier yard. CSX
William street near Howard st and bison runner: Mostly NS CN
Smith Street Park south of South Park Avee. CSX NS UP
Foot of lake ave.  All Chcago line through traffic North and south.
The negative is you lose  traffic coming off the buffalo line.
Ellicot steet off broadway near CP 433: CSX
Baily Ave at Northwest end of FRontier yard for CN, CSX.
SK yards off clinton: CP NS

For hump ops:
Go towards the northeast end of the frontier yard off harlem road. Head towards firestone tire repair. There is a home depot and other stores back in this area. (Waldon and harlem)

Have fun: Tues and thursday in late afternoon and early pm are particularly good for Chicago line.

CRR is mixed with CSX and NS stuff. Quite common on Chicago line

Thanks for heads up but it wasn't timely.
Friday early PM was busy with CSX seeming to keep to tight schedules with its intermodels in each direction. Amtrak barely had enought time to get through.   BNSF was seen both east and west bound. Also caught UP 3233 running behind CEFX 3132 with some full autoracks east. The ballast and ties are new from the maintance done in summer.

These CP SD40-2 had a long wait at the South A/D of the Frontier Yard. It seems its papers were not quite right for the short trip to the SK yard in the evening.

Actually this Q390 train was at Buffalo on June 26th. I have the train order from this. There were 7 units: On the point was UP SD70M #5124, then, UP SD40-2 #9948, NS C40-9W #9451. The next 4 units were "off-line". All were AC6000s, #s 7513, 7559, 7564, and 7577. Probably were being sent to the east coast for a UPS train! That train really was a sweet surprise. I took a few pics from it!

This GP 38 was on the NS line leading a consist of rolled sheet metal north while the dash 9's were waiting with a mix of 2 and 3 bay hoppers to cross the CP draw

The full sequence of the coil run is posted to the railfan site. Usually see a "lighter" spacer car on these runs.

Nothing beats seeing traffic on the rails: the full auto racks work their way through the the NS yard north of the CP draw.  The next stop is a change over at the Frontier Yard. Unfortunately the focus got out of kilter.

Thanks Alcoman,
I didn't realize that the Bsion runner had so much super elevation until after the photo attached. Maybe its the compression of the photo more than the elevation.

Kyle: from the direction of travel I would have assumed it came up from Northwest PA.  Maybe its doing pickups and coming in off the Buffalo line. The lead piece of rolling stock seems to be same.
