Renewed HSR Study

This just in (well, on Thursday) from the CBC

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/01/10/rail-study.html

It appears the provincial governments in Ontario and Quebec are renewing a ten year, or so, old study for high speed rail in the two provinces.  Once again they are looking at linking Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if they'd just get on and build something rather than spend millions thinking about it?  Once up and running I wonder if the trains would be operated by Via, or perhaps someone else?

I know this would never happen, but it would be cool to see a refurbished Bombardier LRC consist cruising at 140 mph along some new straight tracks with no level crossings.  Trains leaving each end every hour.  Fantastic!

Absolutely! There've been more than enough spent on studies already.

If only public (tax) money is used to ever get this done, I think it would be very likely that VIA will operate it. If some private venture (e.g. Bombardier) were to chip in a chunk of cash, then they would probably take over operation.

Further to this, the Toronto Star published a letter to the editor on this subject.

Rail study unnecessary

Onboard for high-speed line
The premiers of Ontario and Quebec have commissioned yet another study to determine the feasibility of high-speed trains in Quebec and Ontario. Once completed, this can gather dust on a shelf beside the eight existing studies written on the same subject since 1980.

In August, a report prepared for VIA's board of directors concluded: "The merits of high-speed passenger rail have been clearly established. The question is not to ask whether it is worth government support, but rather where it stands with respect to competing mega-projects on the priority list of the decision makers. More studies are of no use in this regard."

Maybe it would have been a good idea for the premiers and Lawrence Canon to actually speak to the people who currently run our national passenger railway before diving into yet another study which will, inevitably, be "of no use."
