Title: Alberni Pacific Railway
Post by cycledude on Jul 22nd, 2017, 10:27pm
Alberni Pacific Railway is no longer operating the steam train to McLean Mill due it being overweight for the recent trestle inspection. This info was given me yesterday from the station attendant during a phone conversation. They are using a small (lighter) diesel powered engine on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

They are using Ex M&B 11 a 1942 GE 65 toner pulling 3 cars. I understand they will be tours of the steam sawmill at Mclean Mill but they will not be operating it. The logging show with the Steam Donkey will only be operated on Fridays when it is safe to do so. They hope to has the trestles re inspected soon.

I had a log chat with an ex president of the IHS and the people originally behind the Alberni Pacific. He claims the new crew running everything ignored all the points they were given by the outgoing team and they just didn't bother to call the BCSA to schedule an inspection because the new manager didn't think it was really necessary to go to all that trouble. Is the APR now akin to the ICF, The people in charge having no railway expertise or knowledge.  :P

Perfect, sorry the steamer is not running on the Alberni Pacific but the GE 65 toner is an interesting little engine. Thanks again Henry

Awww...that's lame...

The wife and I intended to take our son up there last summer but it didn't work out...we were going to make a point of doing it this summer, but if the steam engine isn't pulling the train and the sawmill isn't operating, that sorta puts a damper on it.

The mill and train is a huge subsidy requirement of the city of Port Alberni. It is so strange moving to a town where everything is done in back rooms and under the table.

Just to clarify, the #11 locomotive is a 45 ton engine, not 65 ton as reported

When I get back to Port I will let you know. I have heard numerous tidbits about the operation but I can't confirm until I'm back home.

Well I'm home and most of what I was told and information alluded to are basically correct. The whole operation now hinges on a further $300,000.00 in funding to get the 6 miles of rail operation back functioning. I still firmly believe that we now have a new entity running the APR that has way too little rail operating experience and it will just continue to bleed Port Alberni of tax money.

Am I disappointed, damn straight, but I am not surprised as Vancouver Island seems to always put into power people and groups who have no real idea of what is supposed to be their the domain.

Dammit.

Really should have taken the time earlier on to ride this train; it seemed like a solid operation and I just wasn't worried about it disappearing...  :(
