Taking the privilege upon myself of starting a new thread on the continuing train movements on our precious little railroad....I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and personally thank particularly Goose 5 for keeping us updated on the bits and pieces of freight in and out of Wellcox Yard.

This makes me relieved. After Superior Propane in Victoria in 2001 and then the 2014 embargo of Top Shelf in Duncan, I always worry when I hear about an engine going out light and coming back with cars. Especially on the island, you never know if it's the last one.

News is that the boxcars which were at Parksville have now been returned to the Victoria roundhouse... by truck.

Is there anything left at Parksville anymore?

I wonder if a quote from SVI was sought out?

If they did quote, I'm sure it would be astronomical. Are the bridges and crossings south of Nanaimo still being inspected and maintained?

Oh and thanks Goose5 for continuing to update this thread.

I'm not sure of what all was moved but there are plans afoot to move the baggage car and caboose up to Coombs when the new museum siding is put in place. That could be the very last car movement on the east side of the Port Sub when it happens. I am afraid that all the pretending that commuter will work is going to have a very negative affect on the E & N.

Hello all,

I'm sure it's been asked and answered multiple times in the past, but I'm looking for up-to-date information...

Is SVI switching the barge on regular days and regular times during the week?

Goose5 has been faithful with movement reports, which is great. Undoubtedly a pattern of days could be determined from past data, but does anyone know approximately what time SVI is leaving Wellcox for Superior?

I hope to get up to Nanaimo sometime soon to check things out with some rather rare and valuable 'spare' time, and want to get the most bang for my minute.

I think mid-2000s was the last time I chased the Duncan Turn, but I've never seen Superior switched, and never seen the barge pulled.

Much appreciated,
Andrew

EDIT: OK, so there is no pattern emerging from the movement reports in this thread...it appears that Superior is served almost at random...

Just an update, my son and I were in Nanaimo today stopped by Wellcox about 1:35 just to see the twins switch out the siding that Northwest Tank Lines unloads Limestone slurry from tankcars on. By the time it was all said and done a hour and half had passed. Radio's were used to switch with. MOW crews were replacing a few ties Nanaimo North. Great to see trains moving!

To be of more help I can post the north and south time that the train passes my place (which I used to do when I started doing this). Please post if you would like me to do this so a pattern can be determined. Today was light engines in both directions with the northbound being at 12:35 and southbound at 2:15. Generally the northbound rolls by between noon and 1:00 (I am not always home to see it though) and the southbound anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hours later depending on whether cars need to be pulled to Wellington siding for the runaround to head south. From where I live it would be probably be 20-25+ minutes to cover the distance to and from the yard. This should give an idea when the train actually leaves and arrives back to the yard. As for the barge, it is generally switched on Monday mornings (except on a holiday) after about 8:00. I should get down to get some photos but I work most Mondays. Anyway, hopefully this helps a bit.
