Found this while looking around. Interesting read on extending the line south from Port Alberni over former CNR right of way which was never finished.

Strange thing is the author of the above was told by Zoran Knezevic President / CEO of the local Port Authority that they had no real interest in train application because the costs of extending the rail line would never be paid back by the few containers that would be destined for Island shipments. The plan at present is to move 95% of the containers inbound and outbound from ship to delivery barge and from delivery barge to ship. If any containers are destined for the Island they will be transhipped to transport. They claim the 5% is an overly optimistically high number that may or may not ever materialize. Extending the rail line for the possibility of one or two island bound containers would never become cost effective. So we have someone with absolutely no business accumen trying to tell the movers and shakers what's happening.
