Welcome to the forum 404.

Not all of us have given up all hope on the rail aspect of the corridor.

Most of the improvements in the Victoria area have been rebuilt crossings despite the lack of trains, and track work mostly as a result of the bike path.

There is a great deal of historical information and pictures on this forum if you are interested and care to browse. Not a lot of activity recently, but it has always been pretty cyclical.

So when the track work starts-are they going to use a Hertzog train like they did rebuilding the CN line in the interior?

Finally some tie replacement between Rosehill St. and Townsite Rd. in Nanaimo. The orange markings on the ties to be replaced were put on late last week and the crew was just by in the last hour working on them.

Going by the photos, I don't think anyone can argue those ties did not need replacement!

What you have here in most of those pictures are groups of 5-6 ties ALL of which need replacement. By replacing one tie in the middle of each group you keep the track hanging together for a bit longer. A proper repair, it isn't.

For FRA Class 1 it is a proper repair.  You really cannot tell tie conditions from a photograph.  In fact, even though I have been around railroad tracks for over 40 years I do not pretend to be a qualified tie inspector, so I cannot say how good or bad the tie conditions really are, however I do see some that look reasonably good.   When you see the ties that are being taken out coming apart, they you know for certain that they are candidates for replacement.  Beyond that, I would not say how many of those left are no longer doing their job.

In picture 7, to the left of the split tie that's being removed, tie 1 is split end to end, tie 2 is split at the nearer end through to the spike, ties 3-8 are all split end-to-end. A split through a spike hole means that the spike will be loose. The repairs may be 'proper' (perhaps I used the wrong word) but I don't believe they are adequate for long-term reinstatement of a very neglected railway.

HI there, since there will be a substantial amount of work being done over the next year or so, I thought I would start this thread to post pictures, document the work being done, work trains, and progress.

This is not a tread to talk about where the work should start or how the funds will be spent or complaining about this and that ..There is already a spot for that here! NO need for more!..Just positive information to pass on to all of us to show case the rebuilding of a great railway!

Keep it to the point, post pics, and track the progress!

Sounds like someone jumped the gun with this statement, unfortunately...

There is a significant length of track through View Royal with new ties and ballast. This photo is taken December 2014 in Dunsmuir's Cut at MP4

On the 16th of January, while driving by Top Shelf Feeds, I noticed that the mainline and siding were severed by the installation of underground utilities. I would assume they will be replacing those sections soon...
Sorry no pics.
