CN rail - Galloping Goose ride.

The other day, I decided to go for a bike ride, and I eventually found myself in Langford by way of the Galloping Goose trail. Having the rest of the day free, I decided to hop on a bus to Sooke, and ride the last 20 Kilometers of the Goose.

I quickly discovered that farther out along the trail, it becomes obvious that you are riding along an abandoned right of way. I had a small camera with me, so I started to take pictures of some of the evidence of railway activity. As a railfan, it is a bit depressing to see what once was, but at least the right of way is intact for the time being, although it will shortly be dug up to make way for a water pipeline into Sooke, meaning that the original grade will be lost.

Here are some of the photos I took on my ride:

EDIT: I reallize this is slightly off topic, however, I posted these photos with an eye towards documenting the current condition of one of the former Island railways.

This bridge is in fairly good condition, and could probably be easily restored should the need arise.

Old telegraph pole. Not visible are the wires, which continue along the ground for almost the entire length of the trail past this point.

Good thing I have an airhorn attached to my handle bars, other wise I wouldn't have been able to sound a proper 14(L)

Close up of the whistle post. Judging from the condition of the paint, it was restored at some point in the recent past.

The condition of this trestle is worse than the Charter's Creek trestle, owing to it's wood construction. You can see where the CRD has replaced some of the cross members.

*sigh* It's just not the same. As much as I enjoy cycling, I would rather this shot be from the engineer's chair of a GP-38, without the railings on the trestle.

Man, does that ever take me back.  Used to run home-built speeders up and down that track almost every weekend with the UVic Railway Club.

I'm not sure if this is a spur, or an old logging road that crossed the right of way. The angle with the trail, and the way in which the two right of ways intersect, suggest that a switch would have been about 30 feet behind where I'm standing. This is around the 48 kilometer point.

Would that have been with the Sooke River railway? Unfortunately, I'm too young to remember there ever having been a railway operation out there. Where exactly did you run?

Second view of the spur. The slight incline suggests that it was a spur, as a road would have been steeper.

This structure is labeled on the map as the CRD operations centre. Does anyone know what this used to be? The structure is located about 100 meters short of the 49 kilometer marker.
