The end of the line at Borden Mercantile, the 1070 has finished switching at the feed plant
and is heading back to the Point Ellice yard. This would be the last time a boxcar ever moved over CN's trackage in Victoria and Saanich.

One last opportunity for a great photo happened during the GMD-1 1000's last journey
down the Tidewater Sub. The 1000 rested on the trestle and waited for that day's northbound E&N freight, the Extra 8828 North to pass under and give all the gathered railfans a memento they wouldn't forget.

After the E&N freight had passed by, railfans are seen walking back to their various vehicles.
Soon the 1000 would blast it's horn and begin the melancholy journey down to Cowichan Bay, leaving the Cowichan Valley without a CNR presence for the first time in nearly seventy years.

It had been almost seventeen years since the last CNR freight had rumbled slowly down these tracks. The Sooke River Railway Society were running their speeders over this last section of intact railway from Milnes Landing Station to about three miles west up the former line.

Hi Jamie et al
Thanks for this picture and all the other info you and other posters have  provided that Bob Turner and I have used for two CN LINES articles on CNR's Vancouver Island operations.
Do you have any other photos which show the buildings at Borden Mercantile and could you please expand on what we are seeing as I am not a VI native and never saw this operation?
Note for those interested you may subscribe to CN LINES by going on our website for info. www.cnrha.ca
Ask for subscription to start with CN LINES Vol 18 No 1 and you will get four issues, three of which will include major articles on CN on VI.

The GMD-1 1000 is switching Borden Mercantile's agricultural feed plant, located at the end of CN's 1.4 mile Saanich spur. Borden's was CN's last remaining on-line customer, the service ended in January of 1990.

Great pics!

I wondered how far the track extended past that dock on the back of Borden's. I hunted around for evidence this past summer but didn't find anything. There are still rails in the pavement and a bumper at the end of the winery spur across Quadra from Borden's.
