I believe that map is from Robert Turners book "Vancouver Island Railroads".  His initials are on the lower right.

Great photo Emily, that concrete dock with the stack of pallets on it was the one I was thinking of. I don't think I've seen that photo before! You figure it is in a thread in the Vancouver Island section?

Hi all,

I've just bumped up my thread of CN Victoria Track Photos which is a complete set of photos of the line from the interchange to the end of the line at Borden Mercantile taken by me in the 1980's. The 2 photos shown are part of the set.

Thanks Dave! Both for bumping the thread and thinking to take the photos in the first place. Posted 2007, no wonder I was having a hard time finding it again.

Taken from the engineer's viewpoint, CN GMD1 1070 has just about finished crossing the
Selkirk Trestle for the last time, heading back to Point Ellice with two empty grain hoppers.

I did some research and math, and a GMD1 (55 feet) and six grain hoppers (58 feet each between couplers, three pulled off the spur and three ready to spot) is 403 feet, giving them 37 feet of wiggle room, give or take. If they needed any more than that, they'd have to do some creative car juggling, pulling empties out one or two at a time.

Creative switching was something that they did back then. Gravity drops, flying switches, etc.

Jamie, thanks for the study of steam in the mountains. Not your typical railfan pictures with engine closeups. Nice to see the immensity of the Island railroading projects from lineside.

Thanks Dennis. That was the beauty of guys like Elwood White or Dave Wilkie, they wanted to capture the terrain and countryside as well as the trains themselves. It made for much more interesting photos and memories.on Dec 9th, 2016, 2:45pm, Dennis Dalla-Vicenza wrote:       (Click here for original message)

Walking the tracks through the Sooke Hills, telegraph/telephone poles still in evidence along this section. Likely had been fifteen years since the last CN freight slowly ambled along this beautiful part of the old Cowichan sub.

Great pictures Jamie, thanks for sharing.
