I'd love to see these timetables, any chance you could scan and post them?

Here is the CNR employee timetable from September, 1930, showing the Cowichan Subdivision [collection of Jamie Masters]  Note the passenger train running as Train 391 &392, it was gone by the summer of the following year. Note also the scheduled meet between the eastbound way freight and the westbound passenger train at Kapoor [35.5 ]

Tonnage ratings for CNR's Island Division, as of June 27, 1943 [collection of Jamie Masters ]

Left column shows westbound trains, right shows eastbound.

28% & 35% are a form of power rating,  referring to 10 Wheeler steam engines, and Consolidations respectively

A engine such as the 2141, could handle no more than 735 tons moving westbound on the Cowichan subdivision, using this rating.

This is some awesome information, thank you!

I knew the Tidewater sub had a decent grade to it, but 2.2 percent? Dang. That's Port Alberni material.

Glad you liked it, I'll scan some more timetables as time permits.
The Tidewater Sub's grade is surprisingly severe, good thing most loads were headed to Cowichan Bay and not the other way round.

A rare sight at this stage of CN's Cowichan  Subdivision's history, actual ballast cars in the ballast spur !

That's neat to see. Do you know if that spur looped back to join the mainline with a west-facing switch? I've explored around that old ballast pit (now a parking lot for the Trans-Canada Trail), and it looks like it might have. There are still crossties scattered around in the bushes.

I don't think this was anything but a dead ended spur, but I could be wrong.

July, 1988, Deerholme, mile 57.9, CNR Cowichan Subdivision [photo by Jamie Masters ]
When this photo was taken, it had been nearly four months since the last train had left Deerholme forever, on March 30, 1988. Shown here is the switch controlling the north leg of the wye.

Jamie, in the Deerholme removal picture there look to be tank cars in the background beyond the old truck. Were these still on rails or cut up for scrap in place. Or do you know what did happen to them if indeed they are tank cars?

Dennis, I think one was a oil car, the other was a water tanker. They were both left on short bits of trackage, and removed fairly soon after. I think the water car ended up displayed  somewhere, but I'm not sure exactly where.

Thanks for posting the Timetables Jamie they are very interesting.
The siding at Kaptara was where Kapoor Logging transferred logs to the CNR for shipment to Cowichan Bay, the Western Forest Industries spur at mile 75.1 was where they loaded poles from thier Meade Creek operations.
