Thanks Tyler!  Looks like a quarter of a century ago, tfctrains and I were chasing each other around Vancouver Island taking train pictures!

Neat photo at www.cnrphotos.com, GE 80-tonner #74 switching the Victoria yard. Check out the whistle on that thing, I've never seen a locomotive with a 6-chime whistle.

Hello Railfans:

Here is an image from the 1950 NAPL phot collectiion showing CN's Point Ellis yard on Tuesday 4 July 1950 at 0930. For Cn fans this is the best track diagram of point Elis that I have been abel to find. I would like to know what the names of the individual tracks were, what they were used for and how the yard was operated and how the car ferry was unloaded and loaded.

There is lots to see here:

There is a Steam engine in front of engine house, Military vehicles on flat cars. 8 hatch covered hoppers, different sizes of flat cars and a lot of open topped box cars for cordwood.

Here is an image that I am using for track planning with the tracks in the yard highlighted. The grid is 1 foot for HO Scale and the drawing scale is 3/4" to the foot.

Image exceeds display size of 900 pixels wide. (62393 bytes, 1104x404 pixels)

Look at all of the little buildings along the shoreline. I wonder what they were used for.

That is amazing, yes, the best I've seen of the yard and I was wondering, since I now live in the development that has taken it's place, if it would be possible to get a higher resolution copy from you? I'd like to print it out, and frame it for my place.

Cheers.

Over the past year I have provided oversight and guidance to the City of Duncan on the restoration of their ex CN Caboose (Van) #79124 located at the Duncan E&N station.  The City has provided some funding, and a lot of the labour, mine included, have been donated by volunteers.  As well, all of the materials have been donated.

Wanted:  We want to provide a podium style interpretive marker with a brief history and commentary on the caboose.  We already have the usual biographical data; where built, by who, when, etc.,etc.  However, to make the interpretive material more interesting we need more information.

We have not been able to find any good pictures of #79124, nor have we been able to uncover any specific history of the caboose on the Island, or many stories of use here.

Any picture materials or information would be very helpful and appreciated.  Of course, all pictures used would be credited.  Please respond by private email to me through this site.

Thanks, Cobblehillian

Thanks, cobblehillian, for all you're doing to support the CVM projects. What I'd like to see is a concerted effort to preserve the Tidewater ROW in perpetuity for outdoors' people.
Thanks for Dayliner for posting old pics of the Tidewater Subdivision  Deerholm wye.

Here's a photo I took last week of where the southern wye joins the CNR mainline. The southern wye is the only connection the locals have kept open since the line was abandoned. Thanks for your continuing interest.

ABOVE: the rear cycle wheel is just off the southern wye from Tidewater CNR Subdivision (TWS) which connects Deerholm to Cowichan Bay BC P.S. Today, the entire TWS is completely intact but only clear from Deerholm to Koksilah Road (beside T.W. Paterson's Firgrove Publishing home).

I was out on Rocky Point Rd. this morning, and took some pictures of the old CN right of way... now the Galloping Goose trail.

All four pictures were taken (within a few meters of) where Walpole Rd intersects Rocky Point Rd. Here the old CN crosses Rocky Point Rd., after running almost parallel to Happy Valley Rd from the Colwood/Luxton area)

1) Looking across Rocky Point Rd. coming from the Colwood direction. This is what's left of the first Rocky Point rd crossing.

2) Taken at the old Rocky Point Rd. crossing looking in the same direction. The line curves away very gently to the right. Here the old railway ran on the east side of Rocky Point Rd. for a couple of miles, before turning due west and crossing (back over) Rocky Point Rd. for the second time, and heading out to Sooke.
