sorry about the quality of this pic, but it was the second to last run, so it is historically important

Hey, the 1070. Replaced 1003 in 1988 when it was sent back east to be rebuilt.

Jason King caught GMD1 1003 down at Pt. Ellice a few years earlier.

Great photos!

My introduction to CN on the island came in the form of Robert Turner's Vancouver Island Railroads. I lived next to the old Colwood siding for about 11 years. I do remember some time in 1988, when my grampa was visiting from Vancouver, he took me down to the Pt. Ellice yard in the early morning to watch them switch the barge.

Thanks! I was lucky enough about 11 or 12 years ago to get in touch with Robert Turner and he invited me to his house to look at some of his train pictures. I have never seen anything like it, he told me to sit at the dining room table while he went and brought box after box of photographs and slides! There were thousands of pictures from all over. My favorite box was one of the CN Vancouver Island operations, hundreds of them! Thats how I found out about the flour mill because he had pics of a GMD1 switching there. I wish I had a photographic memory as it was too much for me to take in! Robert Turner was very nice and he went over my photo album and gave me advice which was really cool.

Another shot of the GE Centre-cab switching the Pt. Ellice yard. 74 was one of only a few GE locomotives to see service on Vancouver Island. Shot by Gordon Hulford, from www.rr-fallenflags.org

Hey, that was the first GMD-1 I ever got to look around in and drive.  I was briefly living in Calgary during the summer of '86 and a friend of mine worked at CN's Sarcee Yards as an engine watchman.  We used to hang out there all the time and help him clean and service the units that came down from Edmonton each evening.  Anyways, that unit was in Calgary that summer when it still had the A-1-A trucks.  If memory serves me correct, it stuck around in Calgary for another year before leaving.  I just can't remember if it had it's trucks changed out to B's or not at this time or at a later date.

I believe the 1070 had its trucks changed in 1990, then they changed the number to 1170. It was retired in 1999 and then sold to a lease company, not sure where it is now. GMD 1s were always my favorite locos, I wish I had more pics of them in Victoria.

in the first pic I was standing inside the Y and the line did branch off to the right. It was actually the main line that headed up to Youbou (now the Gallopping Goose paved pathway).
