Wow! Never seen that angle on the mill before. Thanks for sharing Jamie!

Now, where was the photographer...up a utility pole?

Recently posted on FB, the Madill factory shortly after opening in the mid-1960s.  The spur in the picture is of interest.  It appears to be double-ended.

Here's a shot of the EH Pope spur in Langford, circa 1994. There were seven loading doors but I only ever saw this westernmost one used and there was a wheel stop just this side of it, hidden in the brush. The spur was cut back to a stub in the late 90s (prior to the arrival of PAW) to allow a parking lot to be enlarged.

I am not so sure about it being double ended.  Looks like an end ramp in the photo where equipment could be loaded/unloaded 'circus style'.

Would they have been laying a fibre cable along the ROW?

Where is/was the Madill factory?

I think they were engaged in laying the cable along the ROW that day.

I believe you are correct.  I showed this image later to some locals and they too only remember it being single-ended.  This picture also confirms a memory I have of seeing flatcars stored here back in the mid-70's.  It's bugged me for years but because of the row of trees there now I just couldn't recognize it.  Only when I saw this was I able to confirm it.

Work Extra 3000 passes Train 198 near the north end of Langford siding.
The Work Extra is carrying 25 loads of PPCLI equipment north to Wellcox and the mainland.
Conductor Morris is standing by the switch, while Engineer Scott is waiting in Train 198.
Engineer Brall and Conductor Forrest are crewing the freight.

Was the PPCLI move a yearly thing in those times? I recall seeing them getting ready to head north in the 90s in the later afternoon while coming home from school...we used to drive down Esquimalt road and turn up Catherine, so I would get a good look into the yard every day. I remember seeing the switcher parked in there most days. The PPCLI move had 3 units and stretched from the Esquimalt Rd crossing all the way back into the yard. I remember being pretty excited about it.

It was a yearly, much looked forward to event, back in those days. I was very disappointed when the PPCLI left town for many reasons, but especially disappointed from my railfan's perspective.

Was their equipment parked behind Macaulay school in Esquimalt? I remember a row of 'huge' trucks lined up along a fenced path that lead from the back of the school toward Flemming Beach/Macaulay Point...

That would be likely. The PPCLI Third Battalion was headquartered at Esquimalt's Work Point Barracks.

Speaking of a busy little yard, Jan 18, 1991, Victoria [photo by Jamie Masters ]

Twenty six years ago on a sunny Friday morning, the yard was bustling with activity, with trucks from Johnson Terminals and United Van lines unloading boxcars, and the day's northbound freight being assembled and waiting out on the mainline for departure.

Are you sure that date and/or description is correct? I could have sworn construction on the new overpass didn't start until early 1995. I have dashcam video from March 1994 where the intersection with the overpass looks exactly the same as it ever did.

i do believe you're probably right about my description being incorrect, Emily. The date of the photo is right, but that ballast was headed elsewhere more than likely.

I wasn't sure myself so I took a look back through Dave Wilkie's photos - according to his records they were building up the new grade near the Colwood interchange and building a temporary runaround track at the Six Mile bridge in spring 1996; bridge construction work was done around May and June 1997, and they laid, ballasted and connected the new track in the last few days of July. The old bridges and track were removed in the first two weeks of August.

The girders for both the new highway overpasses and the railway overpass must have come down by rail to the Langford siding in late winter or early spring 1997 - I'm sure someone has photos of that move somewhere, it was unusual.
