April 14th, 1992, 5:25 pm, mile 7.9 Victoria Subdivision [Photo by Jamie Masters ]
Work Extra 3000  with it's train of PPCLI military equipment, is passing by the southbound Train 198 sitting in the hole in the Langford siding.
 
Conductor Nick Morris is giving the passing freight a PK inspection. Engineer Scott is at the controls of Train 198, while Engineer Brall and Conductor Forrest are crewing the northbound freight.

I'm not sure how often these military trains occurred around this time but I was 10 years old in June 92 and I used to go down to Wellcox on my bike every chance I got. There was an engineer by the name of Frank I believe, that used to let me up on the locomotive while working the yard and the barge. On one of those ride alongs I clearly remember unloading a military load off the barge. I didn't have a camera back then so no pictures but sure is cool when you guys post this stuff. Thank you!!

That would have been Frank Cooper, his son Vern also worked on the E&N, plus his brother John. I think I got told not to photograph that military train when it was at Welcox. The crews were great on the E&N, I enjoyed many rides on the E&N thanks to them.

Wednesday,March 22, 1989, Victoria [photo by Jamie Masters ]
 
CP GP 38's 3003 & 3001, pushing a grain car and a loaded box car down the interchange  
 track in Vic West for CN to pick up later that morning. The grain car was headed to Borden
Mercantile's feed mill, and the box car was spotted in CN's Point Ellice Yard for unloading.

No less than five road switchers and one switcher, fill the yard in Vic West.
Extra 3000 South has just arrived into the crowded yard, with it's train of empty flat cars to be used for the transporting of PPCLI equipment to the mainland for military exercises.

Great photos, Jamie... i remember one military train in 1991 that left victoria with 49 cars and caboose.

Wow great pictures of the military moves!
 
I recall seeing one at the Esquimalt road crossing while on the way home from school one day in the early '90s.
 
There were 3 locos on the point, and IIRC they had come north far enough to activate the crossing, but were then backing up presumably adding more loaded flats to the train.
 
That train and one I saw near Coombs in the late '90s. were the longest trains I ever saw on Vancouver Island.
 
I don't recall what color the locos were on the Port Sub, I think it was still CP days. But the train had to be on the order of 40 cars.

One would think that the overall freight rate would have been lesser had the shipper who ordered that boxcar simply contracted with the E&N and unloaded it in the E&N yard.
 
Great picture!
 
Anytime I'm in Capital Iron I check out the old pictures of the inner harbour that are hung along the stairs.

On the Monday after the devastating Tory cuts to Via Rail, Island passenger rail had been given a court injunction to continue service. Of course, on this happy day, the dayliner had broken down, but freight engine 5021 came to rescue, already being in Victoria as part of the power of that day's northbound freight.
