Another photographic winner, Chris!

Thanks Matt!

Switching the latex cars around at Wellcox Yard on a foggy Friday morning in October. The latex is destined for the mill in Port Alberni, but will arrive there by truck.

Wow.

They need 2 big road engines to switch the yard?

I remember CP doing it with 1 much smaller yard switcher.

I think an sw1200.

With filming for the Godzilla movie wrapping up the previous week, the missile train waits for a trip back to the mainland. SRY 129 also will be returning to the mainland on the next morning's barge to complete the power swap.

Far out!  -  NICE PHOTO, Vicguy!  Love it!

Country railroading at its best - a subtle level crossing with no fences, fields blending into right-of-way, tracks just barely maintained, and a charming little freight.

Can I make a copy for myself?   Please?

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I figured this was probably the best bet.

If you are not already a regular visitor to Mike Dunham-Wilkie's site, you are missing some great photos.

For example, in the past few days he has posted 23 photos of a derailment on the Malahat in 1962.

Awesome photo. And also a great link. Is the steam crane the one that is now in Prince George? I used to help fire that crane.

Well this is not a safe thing to do or legal but I am posting it to show what the underside of the bridge looks like. It is a news article with a YouTube video about some kids climbing the bridge.

I am interested in learning and preserving the history of the railway on Vancouver Island. With a lot of the History taken away we must work hard to insure our kids have the ability to watch and ride the rails we have left and enjoy seeing so much.

Speaking of Top Shelf-I heard they took over a feed store north of Courtenay last year so maybe they will get railcars at Courtenay and transload into trucks there.

Here's hoping.

True, but if a transload is going to be inevitable, then I would put money on the transload happening at Wellcox, not Courtenay.  The trackage north of Parksville is rather rotten from what I've heard, thus why the poles are being trucked to Wellcox and loaded into railcars there, instead of being loaded directly to railcars south of Courtenay.  If the pole shippers and the feed store were willing to rehab the trackage north of Parksville, then perhaps, but the way I see it, not happening.

I didn't mean right now-I mean after the tracks are fixed.

They have to be fixed for the buddcars to return to Courtenay.

Is it a just feed store, or does it have a mill as well? If it's just a retail outlet, they wouldn't get railcars. If there is a feedmill, I can't see Top Shelf spending another $25,000 per year for a second spur on the island.

The "spur" top shelf can use is already there-the run around track next to the mainline at the Courtenay station-it was being used to transload chemicals for dust control a few years back

"Victoria turn"...now there is a phrase that is getting increasingly rare in our vocabulary.   Be nice to have it back!
Thanks for the vintage pic, Vicguy.

Ah, nostalgia week . . . here's my contribution:
One can see from this photo I laid down in front of #6133 and 6148 Budd cars, Tuesday, May 10, 2011, but it didn't stop them leaving.
