A view from above. Looks like five cars have de-railed, glad I wasn't stand trackside when that happened.

I think they have re-railed the first car and they are getting the crane out of the way so the work train can move it down to the Cameron Lake siding.

Being as I'm kind of a weather nut as well as a rail lover... any idea when that derailment was?  That last picture shows a pretty thick midday fog.  So I'm thinking it was probably between the 6th and 10th when the lows were down below OC and there was a likely inversion.

http://www.climate.weatheroffice.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?timeframe=2&Prov=BC&StationID=264&dlyRange=1969-11-01%7C1996-10-31&Year=1986&Month=11&Day=01

Great pictures!  What was the cause?  Did they just derail, or was there a landslide?  Looks like some of the trees on the high side are toppled over.

I was just noting this afternoon on my way back into Port Alberni... I passed 3 logging trucks with BIG trees on them (not the little sticks usually destined for Asia)... plus 2 or 3 stick wagons.

I refuse to believe it's impossible for any of that to return to the railway... they are a PITA to be behind on the highway with the stuff flying off them!

Good Morning Chris, Sidewinder maybe able to help with the date, he was there with me the day of the wreck clean-up. As far as the cause I would think either a broken rail or possibly wide gauge. The track took a bit of a beating with the number of trains plus the loads on them. Plus the the loads were going west rather than east.
For the the number of loads of large logs you are seeing on the Alberni highway, I think a lot of them are going to the mill on the Wellcox spur, so they could go by rail with very little trouble.
We need a transportation plan for Vancouver Island that includes rail and the funding to go with it. I spent thirty six years working for the Ministry of Transportation and Highways. Building and maintaining Highways is an expensive venture.

Now we are on our way, we got to walk to site with the promise we would stay in the clear.

I don't think this would happen anymore!

These are some great shots, glad you were there to capture the derailment.

At that time a lot of the crews knew me so that helped and I have always tried to act responsible and to be respectful so far it has worked.
Yes it sure nice to have a record of some of the events that have happen on the E&N.
Oh yes, I did send a copy of the pictures I took that day to the fellow in charge to thank him.

Getting ready to pull the car into the clear. As I said earlier the crane operator was very good, although I didn't get any pictures of the move, as you see in the next picture he now beside the track, so the train is able to pick up the log car and move it out the way.

Getting ready to pick up the next car, then I would think they would have had to start repairing the track so they would be able to move on to the next cars.
Well that it is all the slides I have of the derailment, I do have some more of the log trains which I post when I find them . Thank you all for the positive comments !
Hopefully Sidewinder will be able to pin point the date for us all.

Via 6005 RDC 5 ready to leave the Island after a summer of little use on Vancouver Island. There was little promotion provided during summer of 1986 for the extra capacity on the Island during EXPO 86.

A photo from Nov 1986 showing Herb Evans Last Run getting ready to leave Courtenay for Victoria. The train was running behind schedule as a second car had to added because of the number of people wanting to make the run with Herb.

Wow those do look different along with the modified flat cars. Did the folks in N. Korea lose a pair of nukes during another test recently? All kidding aside those are some of the most interesting loads I have seen on the E&N. I'd love know what they are for.
