I am trying to get through my slides to see if I have anything of interest.  If I find something I will see what I can do to get it on here.  In the mean time I love the pics TFC they are lovely.

Thanks again Piglet I would love to see some the photo's that you have, it seems to me that you have a lot of the same interests of Vancouver Island that a lot of us on this site do. It was a great place to grow up.

Yes Nick, Karl was a great guy, I ran into Karl about a year ago in Port Alberni, he was always happy to see you, I was sorry to hear that he had passed away. You mentioned that you had spent some time on the Budd Cars with him, I was trying remember last night if Karl had spent much time on the Budd Cars, I know he said to me one time that he preferred being on the freights.

For me, any older photos of the E&N are interesting. Things or events that were once considered mundane are now rare or gone forever!

Sorry I didn't make more of an effort to record dates better, I was always going to, but was always busy out taking more pictures or working. The next slides are of the Log train derailment that took place on the Port Sub while they were doing the log haul to Port. This is a photo of the work train that was there to get things moving again. It has pulled back part of train  from the derailment site at mile 14.5 into the Cameron Lake siding.

The Pettibone Crane is on the Mainline backing to the derailment site to start picking up the derailed cars and logs so the track could be repaired. Logs were in short supply in Port so it was important to get the trains moving again.

A another view of the crane, an impressive machine with a very capable operator.

Now we are on our way, we got to walk to site with the promise we would stay in the clear. We are passing the cars that were pulled out the way so the crane was able to get at the derailed cars.

A view from above. Looks like five cars have de-railed, glad I wasn't stand trackside when that happened.

Being as I'm kind of a weather nut as well as a rail lover... any idea when that derailment was?  That last picture shows a pretty thick midday fog.  So I'm thinking it was probably between the 6th and 10th when the lows were down below OC and there was a likely inversion.

http://www.climate.weatheroffice.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?timeframe=2&Prov=BC&StationID=264&dlyRange=1969-11-01%7C1996-10-31&Year=1986&Month=11&Day=01

Great pictures!  What was the cause?  Did they just derail, or was there a landslide?  Looks like some of the trees on the high side are toppled over.

I was just noting this afternoon on my way back into Port Alberni... I passed 3 logging trucks with BIG trees on them (not the little sticks usually destined for Asia)... plus 2 or 3 stick wagons.

I refuse to believe it's impossible for any of that to return to the railway... they are a PITA to be behind on the highway with the stuff flying off them!
