Here's SW8 6701 bringing an empty tank car back to the yard.  March 2, 1986.

A little dark, but one of my all-time favorites.  The southbound Budd (6134 again) passes GP9 8838 waiting to go north with the Malahat turn. The freight that day left Victoria with two Geeps, two boxcars and a caboose.  March 9, 1986.

A month later the Dayliner was running with two cars (6133 leading 6134), and GP9 8828 was on the freight.  April 6, 1986.

Another favorite--the Budds heading back to the barn past the Malahat turn.  The freight is longer, but only one unit today.  April 6, 1986.

Who remembers the old barge slip on the Songhees land?  It looks like the apron has pretty much fallen into the sea at this point.  If I'm reading old plans correctly, the track at the bottom right corner of this picture is the turnout where the the barge slip lead joined the spur running down from the yard (the diverging route to the right ran up to the yard; the straight route ran ahead to a switchback track that served the barge).  The track running through the picture is, I think, a spur that served Sydney Roofing & Paper (their main facility was further along the waterfront to the east, but they did have a spur at this location as well, equipped with a car winch).  This is in May 1987.

Another shot from May 1987.  I know log cars were running on the Port sub about this time, but I have no idea what these cars were doing in Victoria.  While I was taking this picture, a carman drove up in a pickup, did a bit of welding on one of the cars, and left.

That's all for now.  Just over a year after I took this picture I moved away from the Island--didn't take many more E&N pics in any case, but I do have a few more if anyone's interested.

Wow, fantastic pictures! Not sure why those PGE log cars would have been here, the E&N always seems to have surprises.

I also would love to see more from this era.

Is the connection to CN gone at this point?

The E&N and CNR interchange in Victoria was last used on Feb 14, 1990 when the last active CN diesel GMD1 1070 was run from Point Ellice yard to the interchange where CP switcher 6701 picked it up and added the 1070 to that days northbound E&N freight. Hard to believe that was 22 years ago !

Sometimes, with all the gloom and uncertainty surrounding our favorite railway, a little nostalgia can be therapeutic.  I've been scanning a few more of my slides and here are some of my E&N faves.

First, was anyone else there the day the downtown station opened?  There was a time when the sun shone on our railway (although I remember that day was quite cold).  RDC1 6134 did the honours.  November 10, 1985.

Yes I was there, I rode down from Courtenay that day on the Budd Car. As I remember, we stopped and let the regular passengers off  at Catherine street station they added a banner to the front of the car plus boarded invited quests for the trip to the new downtown station. Later that evening I think there was a dinner celebrating the opening of the new station, plus I  I think long time E&N Engineer Don MacLachlan was  made a Freeman of the City of Victoria.   A positive time on the E&N. Next morning I returned to Courtenay on the Budd car which left from the new downtown station.

Interesting comment, tfc.  As I recall, the official opening ceremony was in the afternoon--probably to accomodate the schedules of the officials in attendance.  The event I attended was in daylight, and at that time of year the regular train from Courtenay would have arrived after dark.  So it sounds like there was a second, unofficial, and more local ceremony when the first regularly scheduled train arrived later in the day.  That's a typical touch of E&N class!  And it also suggests that there were two independent simultaneous passenger movements that day--albeit one of them entirely within yard limits.  I had thought that the first time that happened in decades was E&N days in Langford a couple of years back.

Thanks for the positive comments on the pics everyone--I'll try to get a few more posted up soon.

So my long-promised Port Sub video is nearing completion and what I need now is a couple of volunteers who would be willing to watch a time-coded copy and shoot me some suggestions for some places to add some descriptive titles. I have added a few already such as Lake Cameron, etc, but it might be nice to have a few more as reference markers.

Anyone who helps will get a free copy of the DVD once it is done, but I only need one or two helpers. I know there are a few people here who really know the E&N and its various stations.

The final DVD will contain the trip we took in September 2001 shortly before traffic stopped and is about 35 minutes in length. It has been put to music, but there will be an option to view with just the recorded location sound for the purists

I am also hoping to include, as a bonus, other material from my archive including various shots from the lower island, some of the material I was shooting for Pacific Wilderness as a promotional video before they folded, and, if I can find the tapes, a visit to Canfor including a tour by hi-rail of some of the line.

If you are interested, please email me at shoestringfilmworks@outlook.com.

Cheers!

Jason

Now to the other end of the line, my favorite locomotive of all time CP's Baldwin 8000 pictured at Courtenay.  This spot is now the end of track. In may 1973 there was another 1000 ft track + or -  where the chemicals etc were unloaded for the pulp mill in Gold River.

Well the fall weather is back. Time to look thru some of my old slides, as luck would have it, i found some of CP"s Baldwin 8000. It is not on the Island, but I thought I would post it here. The photo was taken in Revelstoke it is dated Aug 1985. It is on the former line to Arrowhead, it was being moved into a park in downtown Revelstoke along with other CPR Equipment to be put on display celebrating the !00th Anniversary of the city.

Another photo showing CP 8000 being moved by CP 8669 another engine that spent a fair amount of time on Vancouver Island. The cars on the left of 8000 are also being put in the park. They are having quite a time, on the front of the cars on the left, there is a freshly painted SD 40. It has derailed.

Thank you TFC for the lovely shots of the dear old lady of the island.  Always lovely to see her "out and about" not stuffed and mounted.

Glad to share these photo's. For tonight's  show I have found some photo's from Nov 1986 showing a very busy E&N with two log trains a day, seven days a week. A E&N fan's dream.
