UP red lettering/numbers

Hi everyone,

I have two somewhat idiotic questions......

First, I would like to know if the "red" lettering on passenger cars always had a black outline around them or if not, when did they start putting the black around them?

Second, when did the striping and the lettering/numbers go from being "red paint" to "red scotchlite"?

Thank you.

Hello again everyone!!

Three years later, I am still waiting patiently for a response to my original post.

Both the UP and the Wabash railroad's had a "Bright Red" paint color listed in their paint folio's in the 1950's that was suppose to be used for painting the stripping and lettering/figures on UP paint scheme (yellow/red/gray) passenger cars (City of St. Louis).  Also listed for the same purpose was 3M Scotchlite Red tape.

So once again, the question's are, "When did the UP switch from "red paint" to "red Scotchlite" on it's passenger cars/engines" OR....

"was the red paint used UNDER, and in addition to, the red Scotchlite in case the tape started peeling thereby totally not losing the stripe/letter/number until it could be repaired"

I know that red Scotchlite is/was definitely used.  I'm just wondering about the "red paint".

Does anyone know??

Thank you.
