I viewed the SD59MX today at the CSRM on display with a Union Pacific business train.  Nice rebuilt unit from a SD60M to a new 710 motor along with the computer controlled electronics and a new radiator and fuel tank.  This seems to be a new type rebuilt and it did look nice.

Great shots! Is this rebuild going to be fleet-wide, or is this just a one unit test?

I found out they have ten of these modified, but no information of any more being sent to EMD for rebuilding.   They probably will test these units in service and check out the 12 cylinder 710 motor before they order more.

The Union Pacific had a specification board showing the HP rating is 3000 HP for this unit.  I had read this motor is actually rated at 3150, but it might be software limited for local train service in the SD59MX.

Good looking rebuilds, much better then the hack jobs NS and CSX are doing now. Caught my first one in North Platte a few months back and they look good in real life!

I believe the Union Pacific now has fifteen or sixteen of these running out on the system.  The 9915 has been around Roseville for trains recently.  The 9900 has the special exhaust type housing mounted on it making it look like a hump on a camel.   I have only seen that in pictures.
this is the 9915 on the Redding local at Roseville.  The SD40-2's look like rebuilds also.  Notice the flag on the 9915, which the 9906 did not have.

Great shots! The SD40-2's are indeed getting new paint jobs; at the old MoPac Jenks shops in Little Rock the yard was crawling with fresh Armour yellow last summer.

Thanks for the comment.   We are seeing several new paint jobs in California of SD40-2's and GP38-2's also.  Nice to see the new paint.
