This is today's westbound Z train being headed up by one of the SD90/43Mac EMD diesels.  This unit is about 14 years old and holding down a hot train.

And a few weeks ago, the 1996 was leading the Northbound Z at Roseville, CA.

Evev though the SP was bought up by the UP almost 14 years ago (Sept.) you can still find ols SP units out and about, case in point is UP 6362 sitting at Fleta with a Coal train bound for Trona, CA.

Great picture of an old horse.   The dark red has turned to pink over the last 14 years and it is amazing that these units have not been rebuilt.
This one did get renumber and patched, but it is still great to see it.

I read recently a post on Trainorders that listed the last 12 units that remain unpatched this month out of the amost 300 total AC4400's that were purchased by the Southern Pacific.

Thanks CZ,

It is amazing that so many are left in their true colors, there are also a few still running around unpatched (like you said), in both SP and SSW. Here is SSW 9669 (GP60) in Roseville, CA back in April 2009, sitting next to another SP classic Rotary 209.

Here's a new upload: UP 5481 leading an eastbound manifest (MRVWC) past Ansel and towards Rosemond, CA. Soon 5481 will drop down into the desert and the eventually swing to the east and head for the Cajon pass and West Colton. Behind 5481 is recently rebuild SD70M 4828.

UP 1996 made it's first run over Tehachapi in 2010 a few weeks back on the ILBOA-02. It was running second behind a very dirty UP 4852   It was still a great day for pictures.

Great pictures of a rare to California Heritage unit and the one at Cameron with the wind turbines in the background says it all.  I wonder how long the old SP signals will last in Tehachapi in that second picture.  The 1989 is so clean it looks like it is almost new, unlike some of the other Heritage units lately.  Even the plow was spotless.

That unit is interesting indeed.  I wonder where the weight is since it is only used as a slug to the switcher.   Does anyone know if the engine was left in the unit for weight??

The odd part is that it is nowhere near a yard, it based on a dead end mile-long industrial track with no grade and only 4 small customers, nothing else around for miles. I would think at the most the consist would be 10 cars. I would think one GP 35 would easily handle it.
