This board has been incredibly dead! Surely I'm not the only one out trainwatching? The last week has been interesting. A week ago, UP 1982 made an early visit through Las Vegas. I caught him south of town a couple of times before heading into work.

Last Saturday, I spent some quality time on Cima Hill. Traffic was hot and cold, mostly cold. 5 WB's made up an afternoon rush out of Las Vegas. THe first train was a coal train.

And the last was an intermodal. Both shots are from Ivanpah, though between these two trains I was all over the place!

A couple of shots from Memorial Day taken just south of Las Vegas. I went for a hike...along the tracks!

What a beautiful day! Only reached the mid-70's. A week ago it was well over 100!

Nice shots CZ. I just found out that the passenger special is heading back down into Las Vegas tonight! Unfortunately I doubt that I will be able to catch it tonight or tomorrow morning when it leaves. If it heads west out of town, it will meet the Grandluxe coming into Vegas. How awesome would it be to photograph a meet between two full-size passenger trains on a line that has no regular passenger service?

UP 6716, a former CNW unit,  is in the trailing position of an Eastbound BNSF consist at the BNSF Savanna, IL Yard on the evening of June 24, 2008.

Yep CZ, those California wildfires are making Vegas a smoky place too. I noticed coming into town last Sunday that a plume of smoke was stretching across the sky.

As to where I was coming from, I headed over to Tehcachapi for the weekend to catch the Amtrak detours. On the way over, I stayed the night in the Afton Canyon. I'll post a couple Afton shots, then a Tehachapi one.

Afton Canyon was a bit of a disappointment. Scenery wasn't as great as it was hyped to be and traffic was pitiful on the LA&SL. First shot is of a light engine movement EWCOG hauling 9 various EMD SD's to Ogden to be combined with other dead locos.

A few minutes later the hot ZLADV came through. However he had a 50mph car on his train, so the lite engines had just passed him at the last siding.

Finally, I headed to Tehachapi. While Afton Canyon had been a bit of a let-down, Tehachapi was hopping with trains. One 4 hour shooting session in absolutely perfect light made me one happy guy with a memory card full of excellent shots. Only one UP train came through in that flurry, and here it is meeting a BNSF manifest at Caliente.

Is that the UP 5380 leading that train at Rocklin? If so, I caught the same unit as a leader just a couple short weeks ago. Here it is with the MWCSC battling the 2.2 percent grade at Elora, CA.

BTW, I've been checking out Donner Pass shots lately. I'd like to head up some time, but time and money will be the main challenges, mostly time. There's a lot of places I want to visit!

HA! I FINALLY caught the UP 4141 this morning, which was the final UP Special Paint job I hadn't yet photographed. It headed through Las Vegas with the QWCNP at sunrise this morning, and I got some nice shots.

First light at Apex, which is just north of Las Vegas.

He had to stop to meet another train at Garnet, which is just north of Apex. That opened up the opportunity to take this shot as he left the siding.

Barely beating the train to Moapa I fired off one last shot, which I'd been wanting to get since last summer. I wanted 3 good shots of this train, and luckily, I got them within an hours drive of Las Vegas. If not for that meet I might have ended up in Utah chasing this guy!

If only UP had a paint scheme of its own as attractive as those on some of the Heritage units . . . .

Great photo of 3985 but I'll bet that railpictures would reject it.

Nice photos. Looks like 1996 could use a run through the wash racks. Also glad to see that the rotary equipment is still being cared for.
