I am looking for any info available on the Clinton-Davenport & Muscatine Interurban. The line ran between the cities mentioned in it's name. From what little info that I've been able to gather, it hauled freight as well as passengers and was a struggling operation at best. I somehow don't think management was too sharp. They evidently had a death wish because they started a motor bus service that served the exact route of their interurban. Great way to gain ridership.
I also am led to believe that it ran on somewhat the same right of way that the present day I & M Railink uses.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There sure is, Carter!
I've been after IT postcards for a reason...not only was IT unique in the services that it provided (sleeper service with free rolls and coffee in the morning) but it was quite an extensive operation as well. It was also quite aware of sales promotion, too. The postcard showing a motorman and a conductor taking train orders from a phone box boasted about the saftey of the line through the installation of block signal equipment. And they went after the steam railroads, too, with slogans such as 'No dust...no soot...no cinders' etc. If I recall, there was another interurban line that offered sleeper service, but the IT really played it up as a groundbreaking service offering for the traveler.

Hello do you know if there was an interurban that ran from Decatur to Spring that had an ROW next to old US 36. I seem to recall my girl friends father telling me that the rails were removed but that the right of way was used as a bike path and sometimes road. It did look to me like it could have at one time been an interurban or other rail ROW

JWRiley,

The Illinois Traction (Illinois Terminal) did indeed run parallel to Rte 36 thru Illiopolis, Buffalo, etc.....ROW North of 36 and next to the N&W tracks for the most part.

Well, tell you what. If I give you a photo, will you tell us about it? Seems a fair deal. I always found the IT system interesting but never saw it in real life when it had wires over it. You seem to have a lot of knowledge about it and I would like to learn.

Appears to me to be at the Champaign Neil Street depot, the Wabash station is to the left.   Wabash used to run trains down to Sidney to connect to the main St. L line.
Many a railfan trip originated here!!

I stand corrected, the station to the left is the Big Four (NYC) station, from 1937 to the end the IT and Wabash shared a station.

Do you recall if there was a stop at Harristown and Niantic?

From Decatur, West there were stops at: Harristown*, Niantic*, Illiopolis*, Haynes, Lanesville*, Mechanicsburg*, Buffalo, Dawson, Hesser, Riverton.

Those marked * definitely had depots, not just shelters.  Many still exist.

How about extending that trip to Cincinnati ( actually Cumminsville) over the Cincinnati & Lake Erie RR, circa 1932!  ( C&LE has also been gone 65 years!)

That trip was made daily, at least once per day, maybe more often, during the 1930's. C&LE and LSE used to run overnight fast freight trips so that shippers in Cincinnati could get material to Cleveland by 8:00am the next day.

It was the shutdown of LSE freight service in 1938 as the result of a freight handler and clerks strike which caused C&LE to abandon its Springfield- Toledo Division when the LSE freight shutdown severed the connection with C&LE.  C&LE itself didn't last much longer.
