Steamtown 2013 Excursions

The 2013 Excursion season is now online as of last Saturday, Feb 16.
Only 4 destinations are listed : the Founder's Day train to Delaware Water Gap, Moscow, Gouldsboro and Tobyhanna.  There are other trips in the works, and it may be possible to see Baldwin 26 hit the road for short stretches.  Time will tell.
With 3254 taking a year off, all or most trains will be led by diesels.
The 514 will most likely be power on Moscow trains, and the Lackawanna F3 pair might be joined by their B unit partner.
It will still be a while before Boston & Maine 3713 rolls out of shop track 4, but there is a lot of progress taking place this winter.
Here is the link to our train schedule.  RailFest will be on August 31 and Sept 1.

Less than a month to go before the first excursion of the season departs.  It looks like the Lackawanna F3s will handle this train as they did in 2012.  Will you be on the train?  Out for the chase?  Any appreciation of this full length excursion is welcome.  Hope to see you there.

** A week ago the DL&W F3s pull 6 coaches down the Delaware Water Gap and back. This time 663 head ends going south and 664 lead the way home.
* Two X CNJ coaches are behind the DL&W F3As. A combine and a chair car. Both are X-Blue Comet cars.

August 17 was supposed to be one of our more interesting days.  One excursion running to Carbondale for a Library and Lackawanna Heritage-chartered train at 9 and another excursion to Moscow.  The Moscow train could not run due to a D-L freight derailment on the east end of Scranton. Roughly a mile of track was taken out of service.  The Carbondale train did run, and here are a few photos.

Ticket and brochure pickup at the boarding platform.

Entertainment during boarding time.  The Doug Smith Trio.

Nickel Plate 514 will be leading this train.

The procedure for reaching the Carbondale line is to head East to the first switch by S. Washington Ave, then back down West on the Mall siding.  On bridge 60, the train clears another switch to gain access to the Diamond Branch. (DL&W)
Above are the four cars on the train.

Now going forward (north?) the train is on a downhill slope to eventually reach the former D&H main.

Head-end trainmen getting off the Geep to flag the crossings.

Suitable for framing

Stopping the traffic to cross Lackawanna Avenue in Scranton.  From this angle, you would not think the street is 5 lanes wide.

Sold out train.

So long folks!  See you in about 7 hours

With track repairs nearly finished, and the line to the Poconos opened again, the Moscow train for August 24 is still on the schedule.  Then we get ready for RailFest 13.  See you there, and see your photos here.

An additional excursion is on the schedule for Ocotober.  On Saturday the 12th, there will be a train running from Scranton to East Stroudsburg.  9AM to 4:30PM.  The Lackawanna F3s will lead the train to the park in downtown where the original train station stands.  If I heard correctly, the Civil War Generals and ladies will be on the train, and upon arrival, President Lincoln will greet the train and give a short speech.  There may be some changes to this as the plans fall into place.

Tickets go on sale October 12.

Well, the East Stroudsburg - Civil War train never took place due to the US Government shutdown.  Politicians had their say, but the people missed two weekends worth of trains.  Luckily, we were back on track for the final Tobyhanna train and three Moscow trips.

With the season over there is a new event on the horizon.  A Santa event in the turntable area, as Santa Claus will arrive at the Turntable via handcar.  A cookies and cocoa party will take place when Santa comes in.
Letters and postcards to Santa will be accepted at the Railway Post Office.
Keeping the holiday spirit going, the movie classic, It's a Wonderful Life will be shown on the mezzanine level of the History Museum.

This event will be at normal cost to enter the park and museum.  $7.00 per adult. Santa's arrival is expected to be between 2:00 and 4:30.
