According to the Steamtown website (which has been COMPLETELY remodeled, for those who didn't already know), 2317 is expected to return to service by this coming October. Is this becoming any more definite (or at least probable) as we enter September ? I'm taking a trip to Steamtown this October and I'd like to ride the Scranton Limited behind steam if possible. Besides, I've never traveled more than about 50 yards behind her, and she's such a beautiful loco. A little off topic, but while we're on the subject, anyone know the status of 26 and 3713?

Wow, it's nearly two years since I posted on this topic, but here is the Feb, 2007 update. On Feb 13, right as the snow storm was coming in, CP 2317 was moved from the roundhouse to shop track 5, so her number 3 drive wheels can be dropped and prepared for the new set of tires. She will then be moved over to track 7 for work on the bearings and such for the axles to be put back on. Earlier in the day, her tender was placed in the roundhouse, track 15. The trucks are rebuilt with new steel equalizers, new or refurbished springs, and new roller bearing wheel sets. The snow has since closed the park for two days, which can throw the work plan off, but it is expected that she will be ready to run on our first steam day, April 18. With the rebuilt tender and drive wheel tires, she should be mainline worthy. Her 1472 should begin at the end of the 2008 season, if I remember correctly.

Now it's two posts in a row. The number three drivers (back wheels) were dropped from our Queen on Feb 22, and on Tuesday, the 27th, the tires were sweated off with a ring of gas fired up. This took about 30 minutes per tire. Now the wheels and tires are being sanded down, diameter checked, and compared to the replacement tires on size before the new tires are sweated on. The tires will very likely be sent out for cutting the inside diameter, which will be smaller than the outside wheel diameter. The outside tread will also be cut. When they return, it will be a tight time frame to get them back under 2317 to fire up in early April.

This sure is some outstanding news. 2317 has to be one of my favorite operating steam locomotives out there. It will be great to see her thunder up the DL mainline for the first time in four years. A sleeping giant is yet to return.

The new tires for the No.3 axle were machined recently, and returned this week. One tire was sweated on this past wed, Mar 14, and the other on thursday. It was photographed, and the pictures might be on the website, www.nps.gov/stea. The photos of the removed tires are already on-line. At least one bearing box has major cracks. I haven't heard yet how this news affects the repair timetable.

April 2007 update. The FRA came in the other day to inspect the boiler with a hydrostatic test. She passed, and is now being reassembled. While the guys and gals in the shop are miracle workers, they won't get our queen totally together by this Wednesday. Last I heard, she will be ready, and possibly fired up by May 7. The wheel work is complete. The axle bearing work is nearly complete, the crew was working on the throttle in the steam dome early today, and piston rings are cut, but not yet on the pistons. It's funny that in February or January, April is so far away that anything seems possible. Even though the workers have been hustling everyday, and taking mandatory training, time can not be bought back to keep on schedule. The upshot of these extra two weeks is that when 2317 rolls out she will be ready for anything.
