The rumor mill is in full swing on this one. Word is that a combination of metal fatigue in the boiler and nagging mechanical issues will most likely sideline 3254. Her flue time is not up but since proper repair will take years it is playing into the decision, along with the fact that her frame is bowed from a long ago collision and that she never really liked running in reverse all the way down the main. What will happen next is anyone's guess. The most talked about options on the table are a full rebuild on 3254, swapping to parts mike 3377, or reviving fan-favorite 2317. What I haven't heard is the idea of pitching in on B&M 3713, which is being restored by an outside entity, so while we may have to wait we could see two operable mainline steamers in a few years. The Baldwin yard goat is almost finished, which will fulfill the need for steam at Steamtown in the short run, but mainline excursions would be out of the question. Then again, how long has the Baldwin been down? True, they have had their hands full and have been forced to right a ton of past wrongs, but I would not expect a 3-5 year turn around on anything. My best guess is that you will see #26 by the end of 2013, #3713 by the end of 2017, and a restored Canadian engine by (maybe) 2020. Excursions will rely on diesel power or visiting steam for the next few years. I would not fault Steamtown on 3254, the metal fatigue is what it is.

Talk around the lunch table yesterday at Steamtown says 3254 may be done as a running locomotive. Something about a bad frame? Does the spare have a good frame? I don't know any of these things. frank yesterday !
