I got a press release about it. Pretty cool deal!

Henry

From: media -=at=- wmsr.com
Subject: ALL PRESS: MOVEMENT OF LARGE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE TO TAKE PLACE

Movement of large Steam Locomotive Chesapeake & Ohio 1309 from Baltimore to Cumberland, MD for restoration and operation on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

"The transfer of C&O steam locomotive 1309 (2-6-6-2) to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad of Cumberland, MD is an incredible milestone for steam operations in the USA! With this transfer, the B&O Railroad Museum and Western Maryland Scenic Railroad will be preserving steam locomotive history for generations to come."

Within a few days Chesapeake & Ohio #1309 will be lifted onto flat cars for the move to Cumberland, MD.  Thanks to the cooperation of the B&O Railroad Museum, we are inviting media to be present during the lift in Baltimore MD.  Media is also welcome during the delivery in Cumberland, MD.  This Locomotive is special for several reasons.  C&O 1309 WAS THE LAST STEAM LOCOMOTIVE BUILT BY BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS FOR A DOMESTIC RAILROAD.  This locomotive will also be the LARGEST ARTICULATED STEAM LOCOMOTIVE IN REGULAR OPERATION IN THE USA!  Once restored, we will be operating every weekend from May - December.  Articulated explains the front wheels movement around curves.  This locomotive was build for tight turns and steep grades and is perfect for our Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

We would like to thank CSX for the donation of the move across their lines and the use of a flatcar, TTX for the donation of the use of 1 specialized heavy duty flat car, B&O Museum, and Hulcher for their help in planning and executing this magnificent undertaking!

Front engine and tender are on one flatcar.  The rear engine, boiler / cab are on a depressed center 4 truck flatcar. CSX donated one car and the movement, while TTX donated the use of the second flatcar. Hulcher loaded the cars.

Latest press release.

Henry

1309 unload day announced.

Admission pass required for entry.

Chesapeake & Ohio #1309 has been lifted onto flat cars and moved to Cumberland, MD. Because of the limited space we are only able to invite media and WMSR Foundation Members to be present during unload in Cumberland, MD. This Locomotive is special for several reasons. C&O 1309 WAS THE LAST STEAM LOCOMOTIVE BUILT BY BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS FOR A DOMESTIC RAILROAD. Once restored, this locomotive will also be the LARGEST ARTICULATED STEAM LOCOMOTIVE IN REGULAR OPERATION IN THE USA!

We are working with TRAINS Magazine representative Chase Gunnoe and will be forwarding several photos of the move and a blog on a live feed link for the unload in the Cumberland area. They have volunteered all of the equipment to make this possible.

The link to view this is:

The unload day for 1309 is planned for tomorrow, July 24.  Just as before with the Baltimore procedure we will send an additional email out to those interested in coming when we have a time frame to give you.  Because of space limitations we must limit the number of people.  Please request your pass ASAP if you would like to come.

If you are media or a Foundation member, would like to attend and have not received your entrance pass yet please reply to this email with the name and group you represent.

Steel Wheels Festival Sept 26-28, 2014 will be the first opportunity for the public to see 1309 in our restoration shop!

 Hope to see you there!
Thank you!

Just curious if you have any updates, oops, and so on? I ask because the web site for the B&O Museum in Baltimore still has 1309 listed as being there.

When 1309 enters service she will be in C&O paint for a few years and she will then go into WM paint. Note: When she is in C&O paint there will be lots of photo sessions!

A young man and his father spent the day cleaning out the tender and stoker trough... They did an excellent job.
