Well, about the time there was talk about dropping her last fire, fans have wanted to see her out and running again. Now is your chance. Check out the link:

About the only thing that could compete with that would be seeing a Big Boy charge Sherman Hill. Want to place bets as to which one really happens?

I'll tell you what I was very fortunate to ride and chase the 611 many, many times and to say she was a sight to see would be a huge understatement.  I have seen/chased and rode behind the 4449,844.3985,765,1225 ect...and while they are all great engines and we are very fortunate to have them operational.....they are no 611.  There is just something special about her, she deserves to run.  But if they are going to rely on 100% donations to make this happen....it won't.  In this case my $$ is on the UP and the 4014.  The UP has the $$$ and the skill to make it happen, plus the mystery 3rd party which I am sure is offering up $$$.  Plus I believe the UP has been back out to Pomona since the last leaking of info, but this time everyone is wisely keeping their mouths shut until there is something solid to share with the public.

Looks like things are moving in the right direction for #611:

With any luck she will look like this again soon. Remember, she has to be undressed to look & run good again.

I am happy to see this occurring, I have made my donation and will donate again.  Looks like the 611 has a very good chance of returning to operation.

Isn't clear from what I have seen - but is 611 under steam or being moved by diesel power?

Dead in tow, Main Rods off. Wabash E8 #1009 along for the ride behind NS #8103, the N&W heritage unit. Already down at Spencer, NC.

The restoration has officially started as you can see from the missing nut. The NCTM has posted photos of the Superheater tube removal. They hope to be done in about 9 months from what I'm hearing.

Cosmetic or operational restoration? And being done at Spencer? How interesting.

Good.

Now if we can only figure out how to get the OTHER 611 (T&P, now on TSRR at Palestine) and the other 4501 (Frisco, at Frisco)  running...

Got an e-mail notice from NCTM offering tours of 611 restoration with folks who know what they are about as guides. Would that we were a little (well, a lot) closer to Spencer.

Work continues! While getting the old girl going seems to be a "done deal", your help will always be appreciated. Time and money are 2 things that will always be needed.

Does anyone know where the 611 is getting it's aux. tender from?  Is it getting a new one or is it getting it's old one back?

May 30, 2015 will be a good day! N&W#611 will run under its own power from Spencer, NC back home to Roanoke, VA. NS has already made some plans to run her in June & July. Here are some dates you might want to put on your calender:

Sorry for the delay in answering this. VMTX #250001 was what they had at Spencer, NC. #220166 was the number on the one I saw in 1985. I don't know if it is a different tender, or just a different number.

#611 is out and running. Sure looks good to me. Here she is eastbound just east of Blackstone, VA on 6/13/15. Anyone else out there catching any shots?
