Our newly opened visitor center played host to the first general membership meeting. Meanwhile Philip was cleaning a donated signal light. Work continues on the north soffits.

The next work session will be Saturday 5-19-2012.

We had a warm sunny day today and got lots of work done. The north soffits are now complete and scaffolding was set up to work on the south soffits. Several roof braces were refurbished and mounted back on the depot. Meanwhile Mike was working on the frames for the east bay windows.

We plan to have the visitor center open on Sunday 5-20.

The next work session will be Wednesday 5-23-2012. Stop around and get acquainted with our project.

In the near future we must consider some serious fund raising to continue work on the museum section.

With the threat of showers, today was a slow day on the rail trail. We did get more work done on the east side soffits and roof braces.

Next work session will be Saturday 5-26-2012.

Today's work was painting and trim around the south and east soffits. Some replacement trim strips had to be made.

We now have the visitor center in working condition but the museum section requires a lot of work and materials. Our bank account is very low and we must do some serious fund raising to continue the project. Please help out in any way you can.

The next work session will be on Saturday 6-2-2012.

STAFF NEEDED for the HDR VISITOR CENTER

Dear Depot Members & Supporters,

As you know, the Depot project reached a significant milestone last month in opening the north waiting room as a visitors' center. Many of you were there to share the moment, and we know the rest of you were with us in spirit.

While work on the remainder of the building continues, we are faced with the challenge of creating a functioning entity in the HDR Visitor Center. To accomplish that, we need your help.

Right now, we are open only two days a week (Wed. & Sat.), while the restoration projects are underway. Three members are doing the "lion's share" of greeting and talking to visitors about the building and its history, as well as staffing the sales counter. It is a low-key, enjoyable task, since only the one room is functioning.

However, with the summer months coming, and Rail Trail use increasing, we must expand the operating hours for the facility. We are asking those of you who can spare three (3) hours, one day a week, to volunteer your time. We plan to work in teams of two or three, with an experienced leader in each group.

To that end, we have scheduled an Orientation / Training Meeting on Thursday June 7, 2012, 7:00 pm, at the Depot. Please come and help us.

If you would like to help - whether you can be at the meeting or not - would you be kind enough to contact me (stich741 AT gmail DOT com / 845-226-7631) before the meeting date? I am making up information manuals for each volunteer, and I need to know how many to print.

Thanks,

Paul Stich

Most of today's work went into building the frame for the east deck. Next step will be to add the deck surface.

Our fund raising and donations have dropped off considerably since the grand opening of the visitor center. Maybe some people thought we were done but actually we still have two thirds of the building waiting to be completed into a museum. We have the volunteer workers to do the physical work but we need funding to buy materials. Please help out any way you can. You can stop by the depot on a Wednesday or Saturday while we are working or you can send a donation to:

Hopewell Depot Restoration Corp.
P. O. Box 1044
Hopewell Junction., NY
12533-1044

Our next work session will be Saturday 6-9-12.

With morning rain there was not much traffic on the Rail Trail today. We worked inside and made progress on the museum section floor.

We are updating our membership list and will be sending out renewal reminders soon. Has your membership expired ?

Our next work session will be Saturday 6-16-2012.

It was a beautiful June day today and there was lots of traffic on the Rail Trail. Among the visitors was a man from Texas, a family from Puerto Rico and a group of missionaries from Madagascar. Very interesting to talk to.

We assembled and mounted a bike rack by the main door while Mike worked on window frames for the east bay.

Don;t forget to send in a donation to:

6-23-2012 Beautiful blue skies and sunshine today with a few puffy white clouds. Perfect weather for a crowd on the Rail Trail. We were busy talking to people all day long. We collected 14 new E-Mail friends for our list. And the donations were substantial.

The construction crew continued work on the east bay that was damaged in the 1986 arson fire.

We also had two members talking to people outside a local supermarket. They too made new friends for the depot plus some donations. It was a long day but worth the effort.
The depot will be open tomorrow (Sunday 6/24). If you want to see what we are doing stop around.

The next work session will be Wednesday 6-27. Maybe you could lend a hand. We are actively recruiting and training part time docent/tourguides. Come on down and join the fun.

7-7-2012 New siding for the fire damaged east bay.

Today was the peak of the heat wave with temps near 100. There was quite a bit of activity on the Rail Trail and we talked to one group from Vancouver Canada. Sales and donations were good.

Despite the heat our volunteers added new siding to the east bay and completed the arch trim over the west door.

The next work session will be Wednesday 7-11-2012.

7-11-2012 On a sunny Wednesday in July the construction crew added window trim on the east bay and completed the floor in the museum section. It is now ready for sanding. In the afternoon they started on the floor in the ticket office.

Photos are available on our Facebook page.
One of our members has created a Facebook Page about the Hopewell Depot Restoration. Take a look at this URL.

Meanwhile there was quite a bit of traffic on the rail trail. Among the visitors was our former County Exec Bill Stienhaus.

The next work session will be Saturday 7-14-2012. That would be Bastille Day for you French fans.

7-18-2012 Thunderstorms again today but the grass and flowers love it. About 2:30 PM the skies opened up and there was a sound and light show.

Our construction project for today was installation of a new air conditioning unit and running the conduit for the wiring under the east deck. They got most of it done before the storm hit.

The next work session will be Saturday 7-21-2012.

7-21-2012 We had perfect weather today, blue skies and temp in the 70's. Lots of traffic on the Rail Trail including a family from Finland. I remembered enough of my Swedish to talk to them about Hopewell Junction railroads. Our depot project now has E-Mail friends in Finland (also Sweden, Norway, Scotland England, Germany and Canada - more than 800 names).
The visitors from Madagascar did not leave an E-Mail address.

Our construction crew continued work on the air conditioning conduits and the east deck. Inside they added shelving to the museum room closet and repaired the floor patches in the agents office. It was a very good day

The next work session will be on Wednesday 7-25-2012.

7-27-2012 The major work this week was working on the east deck and installing a new air conditioning system. It feels good on a hot day. Also the volunteers were preparing for a fund raising dinner by stuffing invitations.

3. 1- 3' interior Dutch door unit 342.00
4. 1- 6' French door closet door unit 380.00
5. 8 sets of 6 foot track lighting w/ 24 lights 750.00
6. 6' x 3' trap door hardware 280.00

8-1-2012 With overcast skies and a bit of rain we managed to finish the deck on the east side and also worked on the east bay window trim. Inside our crew made progress on the floor of the agents office.

Next work session will be Saturday 8-4 2012.

Don't forget to stop around at the Maybrook RR Museum on Saturday. The museum will be open all day with videos and talks by "old timers" who actually worked on the Maybrook Line and in the Maybrook yard.

This is your chance to meet and talk to the them first hand.

8-8-2012 Hot and sticky August weather but the work continues on the east bay windows and the inside floors. We also greeted Joey, our newest tour guide. He seems to be a walking encyclopedia of local history. He already has experience as a tour guide at the Van Wyck house in Fishkill.

The next work session will be Saturday 8-11-2012

8-11-12 With the threat of thunderstorms, the crew worked mostly inside on the basement access hatch. They did some outside work on trim stips on the east wall.

Next work session will be Wednesday 8-15-2012

8-15-2012 It was very noisy around the depot on Wednesday. The County Rail Trail maintenance crew was there with power tree trimmers, lawnmowers, weed whackers and leaf blowers. At the end of the day the area was spic and span.

Our work crew added new windows to the east wall and bay. In addition, they put lift handles on the basement access hatch.

We are now part of the IBM Matching Grant Program. If you are an active or retired IBMer and send in a donation, be sure to include a completed matching grant form with your donation.

The next work session will be Saturday 8-18-2012.
