Wednesday 10-26 was a cool cloudy day but work continued. There was a bit of grading around the new walk and also progress on the east wall deck. Our friends at Williams Lumber provided a lift truck to put the heavy cap back on the chimney. The next step will be a flue liner and then the original ceramic tile stacks can be put back on top of the chimney.

The new roof material is scheduled to be delivered next week.

Next work sessions will be Saturday 10-29 and Wednesday 11-2.

Our shipment of roof slate arrived today. The roofing crew cleared the snow off the west side of the roof and began putting the new slate up on the east side. They say they will finish the roof in a day or two, probably by Saturday morning. The good weather this week will help. With the new roof in place we can concentrate on the interior.

We would like to have a celebration for the new roof on Saturday. Be sure to stop around and join in the fun.

Our depot budget is getting pretty low. We will need to do some serious fund raising shortly. Some of our members have started pledging an amount and sending in checks on a monthly basis. We need as much participation as we can get to continue the project. Let's keep the momentum going.

Saturday 11-5-2011 was a banner day for the depot restoration. The roof was completed and the scaffolding removed. Rich cut expansion grooves in the walk while the crew worked on the interior ceiling. The weather was perfect for a brisk fall day. You can even see the moon coming up in the depot building portrait. From here on we concentrate on the interior Rail Trail information center and the museum section.

To celebrate the new roof we had a catered lunch for the volunteers and the East Fishkill Town board members. The Town paid for the roof materials. Mike O Brien, John Hickman and Rich Taylor provided the speeches after lunch.

As I said, it was a banner day for the depot restoration. Now we have to raise enough funds to finish the job.

Wednesday 11-9-2011 Beautiful fall weather today. Dave is restoring the numbers carved into the west door frame. The numbers are the exact mileage to Campbell Hall, the west end of the Maybrook Line. Meanwhile inside, work continued on the reception center ceiling.

A reporter from the Southern Dutchess News came to the depot today. She says there will be an article in the paper in the next week or two.

This coming weekend, on Sunday 11-13 we will have our usual table at the Poughkeepsie train show at the Civic Center. We could use some help with the set up and manning the table during the day. If you are available for a couple hours on Sunday, give me a call at 845 221-9330.

Our treasury is getting low. We need all the help we can get.

Brisk fall weather today. Most of the work was on the two doors in the west wall. The arch-top door gets a lot of detailed attention while the square-top door gets new panels.

Next work sessions will be Wednesday 11-16 and Saturday 11-19.

Today's work was inside on a sunny day. A catwalk was installed for the ceiling insulation work and the reception center ceiling was almost finished.

We are planning to continue the work on Wednesday 11-23 and Saturday 11-26.

If you have any good fund raising ideas let us know. We need to fatten the treasury to pay expenses.

Today's activities included salvaging interior original wall bead boards, installing a walkway for the ceiling insulation work and adding a vapor barrier in the agents office. The west door looks good in a new coat of paint.

The next working sessions will be Saturday 12/3 and Wednesday 12/7. We have lots of inside work to do.

We have a general membership meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7:15 p.m. at the East Fishkill Community Center. We have the building starting at 7. The meeting is open to the public and we have business to conduct also. You can come to the meeting and join the Restoration. We would be glad to have you on board.

12-3-2011 We had a very productive day at the depot. A stove from the Fishkill train station was donated. Much of our salvaged wood was sorted and cleaned. Two insulators made by Whitall Tatum Glass Company were found along the Rail Trail. The east door got new glass and the agents office got a new ceiling.

The next work sessions will be Wednesday 12-7 and Saturday 12-10.

We still need fund raising and volunteers to do the work.

12/7/2011 On a cold and rainy Wednesday we worked inside the depot. Dick measured the stove base for some repair work while Rich worked on the west door latch. Meanwhile Laura, Mike and Andy put a new ceiling in the ticket office.

Since the County removed the porta-johns from the Rail Trail we have arranged for a depot porta-john donated by Herring sanitation.

The next work sessions will continue the inside work on Saturday 12/10 and Wednesday 12/14.

If you have any good fund raising ideas let us know. We need funding to continue the restoration.

It was a busy weekend at the depot. We worked both Saturday and Sunday. Herring Sanitation delivered a donated Porta-John. A sag in the reception center floor was jacked up and a hatch was added for access to the attic insulation work. New battens were added to the east wall.

On Sunday the insulation was blown into the ceiling of the reception center, agents office and the ticket office. Feeding the insulation bales into the blower was a dusty job.

The next work sessions will be Wednesday 12/14 and Saturday 12/17.

12/14/2011 On a bright sunny day the depot sports a bit of holiday decoration. Inside we worked on the bead boards for the interior walls. The last photo is of 18 inches of new insulation in the ceilings.

The next work sessions will be Saturday 12/17 and Wednesday 12/21.

I have been in contact with a Wall Street Journal reporter who is working on an article about the train barge traffic across New York harbor. He would like to hear from anybody who can fill him in on the historical aspects of those barge connections. If anybody has info for him you can contact him at his E-Mail address:

Wednesday 12/21/2011 It was a rainy day but work continued inside. Most of one wall of the reception center got restored beadboard. Our electrician worked on the west door outside light. There were two donations. The Lionel coin bank flashes lights and plays train sounds when you put a coin in. The pole lantern is a Dietz No. 8.

There will be no work sessions for the next two Saturdays. We may work on Wednesday 12/28 if anybody is interested.

We had glorious warm weather today ( 50's in January ? ). More insulation was added around the foundation beams and also at the top of the east wall. Also some work was done on interior woodwork and the reception center floor. A collection of old bottles was found in the crawl space under the reception center.

Our next work sessions will be Wednesday 1-11-2012 and Saturday 1-14-2012.

Come on down and join the fun.

^^2-1-2012 Work continued on the floor boards while new battens were made up and
added to the fire damaged east wall.
We have no idea where the train car came from. It was covered with coal dust.

The next work session will be Saturday 2-4-2012.

With a bit of snow on the ground, we worked mostly inside today. The wall of the ticket office got some attention from Paul while Joe added recycled hardware to the southwest door. While all that was going on, the rest of the crew finish laying down the floor boards in the reception center. That floor is now ready for sanding. We are still waiting for the wall insulation crew.

The next work session will be Wednesday 2-15-2012.

For those of you who are planning to ride with us on this years annual CNE Rwy historical tour, the time is getting near.

This is a heads up for those planning to join us for the 2012
segment of the annual bus tour along various portions of the former
Central New England Railway. The 2012 tour will be on Sunday
April 1st (rain or shine).
We will depart from the parking lot of the train station in Canaan, CT
The 2012 tour will cover the CNE between Norfolk, CT and the NY
State line at Millerton plus Copake in NY.
The exact routing is subject to change if we run into any last minute
problems or find a new way to get the buses into a small space. Due
to the narrow roads and lack of suitable parking in much of the general
area of our tour, some locations can only be shown from the bus
or in photographs. We will show you as much as we possibly can.
As usual, everybody will get a copy of the 2012 CNE Tour guide
book. We have a lot of ground to cover so we will have coffee and
buses will roll at 9:00.
The cost of this year's tour will be $55.00 per person and
payment should be made out to: Joseph Mato CNE 2012
Be sure to include your E-Mail address so we can contact you if we
need to. If you don't have E-Mail then include your phone number.
Send it to:
JOE MATO-CNE 2012
62 WOOD ROAD
REDDING, CT. 06896
Any money that is left after expenses will be used as "seed money"
for next years trip.
As we did last year, we have two buses with 55 seats each. In past
years we sold all seats and had a waiting list so don't wait too long to
send in your reservation. Please note that any request for refunds
must be received thirty (30) or more days in advance of
the tour date. If you can find a replacement to take your bus seat,
that's OK just let us know who it is. We have to know who to let
onto the bus when the tour starts. If you can't find a replacement
then we may have somebody on the waiting list to suggest but we
can't refund money that has already been spent on tour expenses.

2-14 and 2-15 2012 The wall insulation was completed in about 4 hours on 2-14. On 2-15 we sanded the visitor center floor and cleaned up salvaged door trim boards. Also did some outside work on the east wall.

Next work session will be Saturday 2-18.

Does anybody want to sponsor ceiling light fixtures for the visitor center ? The green shade type will go for about $60 each and we need four of them.

We also are looking for an antique telephone for the agents office. Anybody have one to donate or loan ?

It was a windy day outside but the inside work continued. The visitor center walls are now ready for painting. Much of the museum section ceiling was installed and and the west door got a new sill.

We are working toward a grand opening for the visitor center on 25 April.
Still looking for a "candlestick" style antique phone for the museum section.

Next work session will be Wednesday 2-29.

2-29-2012 On a snowy leap day the ceiling work in the museum section continued. The museum ceiling is ready for the blown in insulation in the attic.

The next work session will be Saturday 3-3-2012. The main project will be painting the ceiling and walls of the visitor center. Put your old clothes on and stop around then grab a brush or roller. We have the paint, now we need hands to use it.
